Surviving the Cataclysm: The Shattered World Roleplaying Q&A

Times are a-changin’, ladies and gentlemen. The world is cast in flames under the shadow of Deathwing, the elements are in a perpetual state of unrest, and the waters stir with something foul. Forgotten evils emerge from the depths of Azeroth in the Death Aspect’s wake as the oceans run black with obsidian. In just over a week at the time of me writing this guide, the Cataclysm will unroll on live servers. Patch 4.0.3 changed everything about the old world. I find a lot of people coming to me for advice on my roleplaying server about some common questions I get from both experienced roleplayers and newbies about getting into RP in Cataclysm. For your convenience, I’ve assembled some common lore and roleplaying questions in this guide in order to make some of these answers easily accessible. Enjoy, and don’t forget to reply back and tell me what you think, or ask another question to be added to the list.

Deathwing's human form.

Q: When the Shattering hit, it doesn’t seem to be clear how much time has passed between the fall of the Lich King and current times in Cataclysm. Do you have any idea how long it has been?

A: The answer is: no. The Blizzard creative development team has been very mysterious and elusive regarding the actual amount of time that has taken place between the fall of Arthas and Cataclysm. Some community managers, who aren’t the first go-to source for lore information, have insisted that it has been less than a few months, or even a few weeks. Some quests, like the Night Elf mage starter quest, suggest it may have been at least a year. The bottom line is that until we hear an official announcement from the creative development team; treat the transition as literally as possible. Blizzard has never made a significant time jump between any of their expansions before, so they probably won’t start now. As cool as it would be to age your character by a few years, it probably isn’t going to go down that way.

Q: What’s the deal with Night Elf mages anyway?

A: Night Elf mages can be one of two things: original Highborne mages, or new Kaldorei trainees. After the Shattering, the Highborne were re-introduced into Darnassian society after a ten thousand year exile. The Highborne and their ilk were responsible for bringing Sargeras’ etheric body into Azeroth, and thereby, the Sundering. After Deathwing ravaged the world, Tyrande Whisperwind and the Sisters of Elune reluctantly accepted the help of Archmage Evenshade and Estulan, a powerful Highborne scholar. Offering their ancient magic to the Alliance, they were unofficially initiated into its ranks, given the charge to help defend Kalimdor from the Horde. Their main theatres of operation are Feralas and Azshara, and they battle constantly with the traitorous Grimtotem tauren and the Sin’dorei in skirmishes across the two regions. As I said before, they can either be Highborne or Kaldorei. The difference is merely their origins. If you are a Kaldorei mage, you will be a new initiate into the arcane, trained by ancient Highborne masters. If you are a Highborne, you would have been a part of the Shen’dralar magi who hid in Dire Maul for the past three expansions, avoid the persecution of their former brethren.

Q: What about Dwarf shaman?

A: Dwarven shaman have an interesting bit of history behind them. After the War of the Three Hammers, the Wildhammer moved in an exodus to the hilly region of the Hinterlands. From Aerie Peak, they continued to devote themselves to ancient arts unheard of in Bronzebeard society. They crafted totems and paid tribute to ancient gods and goddesses; some Wildhammer even claim to worship the goddess of the Night Elves, Elune! Because of their traditions, the elements deemed the Wildhammer worthy enough to hear their ancient call. Wildhammer disciples flocked to listen to what the elemental lords had to offer. Crafting their totems from the ore of the mountains that surround their home, the Wildhammer are some of the most formidable shaman on the face of Azeroth.

Q: What’s the deal behind Orc mages?

A: Orc mages have a number of different speculated origins. Some claim that the Orcs of Orgrimmar learned their new talents from their Darkspear Troll allies, who have already adapted to the art. The shadowy history of Orc warlocks would certainly allow for the Orcs to expand their knowledge of the fire magic that both magi and warlocks alike deploy on the battlefield. The third and most interesting theory is that of Thrall’s expanded studies influencing the Orcs to take up the role of the mage. Originally slated to acquire Atiesh from the body of Med’an, there have been whisperings from the creative development team in the past that have hinted at Thrall becoming the new Guardian of Tirisfal before he replaces Deathwing as an Earth Aspect. It would be natural for Thrall to learn new magic and teach this magic to his followers, in order to turn the elements and the arcane in tandem against Deathwing and his dark army.

Q: Blood Elf warriors. Explain this.

A: Easy. If you can pick up a sword and swing it around as a paladin, you can easily swing one around as a warrior. Originally, Blizzard told us that the Sin’dorei thought it too barbaric to take up the warrior’s mantle, but spending all of that time around the Horde has definitely had an effect on the proud race of elves.

Q: Guns. Do Night Elves ever use them, or have anything against them?

A: No. It is evidenced in Cataclysm that Night Elves do in fact marvel at guns and new technology, and openly use them on the battlefield: the Gnomish Spec-ops quests in Stonetalon show that the Kaldorei are not afraid to deploy new arms, and just as well; the instinct of the hunter is to adapt to new prey with new weaponry, to evolve one’s own repertoire with a wide variety of tools.

Q: Why doesn’t anyone talk about Deathwing in the quests early on?

A: There’s a saying about Deathwing: if you ever get to see him up close, you’ll not live the night. Most people who witnessed Deathwing in Stormwind were killed by him. Estimated losses are massive for the city of Stormwind, as can be told with the complete eradication of the Park, which housed over 50,000 Kaldorei according to the RPG book. Also, Deathwing struck in the middle of the night. Most probably assumed it was just a firestorm from the elements.

Q: Troll warlocks?

A: The Trolls have shadow priests and mages. Put two and two together, along with some demonology, and you’ve got warlocks. Trolls have a long-spanning history of ****ing things up with their evil magic and associated rituals, so it’s not a stretch to say they could also become warlocks.

Q: Okay, but what about Dwarf warlocks and mages?

A: The Dark Iron recently joined Ironforge, bringing their ancient sorcery and dark arts into the society. Previously, warlocks were banned from Ironforge. Now that the art is accepted (reluctantly) by the Council of Three Hammers, learning the art is as simple as going to a trainer. As for mages, the Gnomes have spent a lot of time around Ironforge, which means that their Dwarven allies would have easily picked up the art if they paid attention.

Q: Gnome Priests?! What?

A: The keyword here is amalgamation. When multiple races band together, it is inevitable that their traditions and professions will eventually spread. Since the Dwarves have some of the most dedicated priests of the Light on Azeroth, it follows that the Gnomes would also utilize this magic, being pragmatic little buggers themselves.

Q: TAUREN PRIESTS AND PALADINS. You’ve got to be kidding me.

A: We’re not. Tauren priests are paired with Tauren paladins, or “Sunwalkers”. They are a part of a new movement in Thunder Bluff: warriors and casters who worship the light of An’she, one of the two “eyes” of the Earth Mother. Tauren paladins do not call upon the same “Light” as the humans or Blood Elves, but call on a primal force of nature like Moonkin, which is the “Sunlight”. Suppose you could think of them as potentially-dangerous photosynthetic flowers with swords and/or staves.

Q: Who are the Twilight’s Hammer?

A: The Twilight’s Hammer are unlike any other “cults” in the World of Warcraft. The Cult of the Damned was a well-organized and well-structured cult that focused on a single goal, which was to establish the Scourge as the dominant force over Azeroth. These goals are almost imperial, because the Scourge was simply trying to convert every living thing on Azeroth into undead, so to spread their disease and convert followers. The Sargeron cults of the Burning Legion were also similar, as their mission was to take convert warlocks and powerful heroes to help the Burning Legion push through the Dark Portal and assimilate the races of Azeroth. The Twilight’s Hammer doesn’t care about assimilation or dominance; the Twilight’s Hammer just want to destroy the world and everything with it. They’re all about chaos and awakening the primal forces of Azeroth to bring about its destruction.

Q: What happens to Mankrik in Cataclysm?

A: Mankrik buries his wife, having recovered her body. He also dawns a badass Blademaster flag. I really hope he ends up being the person to kill off Deathwing, I really do.

Q: How do the new zones like Uldum and the Twilight Highlands pop up out of nowhere in Cataclysm?

A: Uldum was an ancient titan land hidden behind a gate that was once thought inaccessible. The gate appeared to open into some kind of underground chamber or cave, and explorers couldn’t get near it due to the massive sandstone guardians who patrolled the area in Tanaris. Finding it in the ancient desert was a feat in and of itself, if you didn’t die of dehydration or exhaustion first. When the Cataclysm hit, it was revealed that Uldum was actually on what was previously thought to be the South Sea. A cloaking generator hid the city from sailors, and it just looked like a few sandy spots on a patch of land. The Cataclysm ruined the cloaking generator, revealing Uldum to adventurers and opening the gate for them to explore the ancient secrets of the desert kingdom. The Twilight Highlands was a shelf on the mountains above Wetlands. Here, thousands of farming families from the Wildhammer made their home, constantly battling with the Dragonmaw. Flash floods and earthquakes brought the shelf down in a landslide, and the Twilight’s Hammer began to corrupt the land and use it for their draconic rituals. Now, the Wildhammer and Dragonmaw battle at the Twin Peaks for control over the region.

Cataclysm Herbalism Routes!! Cash off the day of launch!

I had some time on the Beta to figure out some Herbalism routes for the upcoming Cataclysm expansion. I mainly did this for the purpose of leveling Herbalism as fast as possible so i am not going to show routes for all the new zones!!

This might give you a headstart in Herbing and you can also use the Routes for leveling.

The Herbs gathered in the first few days/weeks can be sold for a very nice ammount of money. And since you guys are probably going to have the "best" routes to get as many Herbs you can in the beginning this is going to make some gold for you!

Im going to start of with Mt. Hyal
You will gather Cinderbloom, Stormvine and Azshara's Veil here.

Here is the 1st image of my Routes. You may start at any Point you want to.

I came out with an average of 3-5 stacks after i used the routes.

If youre thinking of leveling herbalism, you can stay in hyal until skill 500, although i would go to Deepholm if you are level 82 already , at 475.

Next up is Deepholm. The Herbs here are everywhere. And i mean it, really everywhere, so there is no "real" route to this, but to give you an Image of the routes i checked, and were most usefull i created another route plan!

Here you go with the routes

You may rinse and repeat these Routes many times a day, you can make a lot of cash with it in the first few days/weeks! Try to Rule the AH with the herbs!

World of Warcraft 6 Year Anniversary This Tuesday!

This Tuesday World of Warcraft turns 6!

For six years World of Warcraft has been leading the online gaming world and impacting lives everywhere! But World of Warcraft was not just born over night there has been many changes from the alpha to the game we play today!

As you can see the game we play today is radically different from the very first alpha version:

Lets take a look at the original World of Warcraft and how its expansions have effected it over the years.

Vanilla

It all started with "Vanilla", or the original World of Warcraft...

There were no goat people or knights of death, levels were not easily gained nor was gear. Many consider this period of WoW the most fun and hardest time of the game. People had to know the class and play well to succeed, while now to some it seems it's just who can smash the buttons faster sometimes.

Back in vanilla 60 was the king and the talent trees were tiny and mounts were very expensive, however many people are still in love with the original WoW that they first fell in love with, and while it won't be coming back anytime soon it will still always have a special place in our hearts.

After Vanilla was going strong for nearly 3 years Blizzard decided it was time for change... and this change came in the form of flying space ship goat people, angry elves, and a whole new world. The Burning Crusade was released!

The Burning Crusade

Many players both new and long time enjoyed the new content and change. Flying mounts and new races along other new content meant there was a lot of new stuff to explore. TBC brought a breath of fresh air into World of Warcraft after it had been going for so long with only content patches, and brought something new to players of all levels. And then only a year later the scourge came...

Wrath of the Lich King

Only a year after TBC was released Wrath of the Lich King was released, along with it came 80 and many, many new features. Death Knights were made and paladins dominated. Many players did not like what Blizzard was doing to WoW and left, while the faithful players remained and enjoyed their stay. Now after WoTLK and 80 being king for two years a new expansion is on it's way and it will surely shake the world...

Cataclysm

In just three weeks cataclysm will be released and it will shake World of Warcraft to its core. With Cataclysm comes many, many changes and some argue for the worse, we have already experienced many of the changes and I for one welcome them. Cataclysm will certainly have a lasting impact on World of Warcraft and it's players, but those of us not in the beta will just have to wait the short time before deciding ourselves if it is for good or bad.

The End

Well that brings us to our end of our quick recount of WoW, what is your opinion about how world of warcraft has changed over the years, and have the changes been for good or bad?

By the way, be sure to login between November 30th and December 14th for your 6 year Anniversary Feat of Strength!

Cataclysm Stockpiling Guide

As most of the WoW population will reroll in the first 1-2 months of Cataclysm, a never before experienced (on such a large scale) economic aspect of World of Warcraft will come to life. That is, hundreds of thousands, or even millions of people will rush to the Auction House to buy the mats required to powerlevel their alt's professions.

This guide will teach you (or just provide you with a list) what, when, how and how much stuff to stockpile for Cataclysm in order to resell and make a huge profit. I have made around 100,000 gold during the first few weeks after WotLK was released using these methods and I am 99% confident that they will work for you. Enough jabbering, let's get down to business:

How this thread is arranged:

1) General Information
2) Professions (Secondary + Primary)
3) Companion Pets & Mounts
4) Other stuff that should be in here

 General Information

You should have a bank toon equipped with everything it needs (ex: own guild, large bags, auctioneer - or whatever addon you prefer - auction house data, etc.). If you don't, read this.

You are going to buy a ton of items from the auction house, so you must have a 5k-10k gold budget to spend on the stuff listed in this guide.

If you use Auctioneer to gather your auction house data and have all the percentages saved up, look only for stuff that is under-priced, NEVER buy over-priced stuff! This is a mistake that most people do because they lack patience. You should never spend more than 10-20 minutes a day looking through the AH for things to stockpile.

Again, if you use Auctioneer, always buy items that are under 60% of their particular market value.

Professions - What to Stockpile

Mining

Since mining fuels 3 primary professions -Blacksmithing, Engineering and Jewelcrafting- it will probably be your main source of profit using this technique.

What to buy

Infinite Dust - A LOT-
Shards may or may not increase in price, depending on how many people run instances and DE their drops. I have no way of telling how the shard niche will turn out and I don't want to waste money on something that will drop in price.

Low level enchants will sell amazingly fast due to new populations of twinks that will start to emerge during Cataclysm, so keep that in mind!

Cloth

Any cloth will do, really. People will want cloth for Tailoring, Engineering and of course, First Aid. Don't forget about all that cool rep that you get just by turning in cloth.

Runecloth is your best friend in this situation.

Also, one Netherweave Bag require a stack of Netherweave cloth to create. Most people will buy bags from the AH for their alts when Cataclysm hits, so expect to see a large increase in Netherweave prices.

Elemental invasion (howto)

So, phase 4 of the elemental invasion have started.
There wasnt any good directions at the sites I looked at, mostly simple explanations and loottables.
You might also notice how many people in tradechat thats so confused they shit bats out of their faces.
Lets begin shall we?

NO prequests needed for this one! <-- so, that out of the way.

------------
Elementals are comming to town!
------------

Stormwind, Ironforge, Orgrimmar, Thunderbluff.
Phase 1, prepare for the big attack!
At (random 2-3 hours?) times, there will be a yell and you will noticed a text saying you need to set up X barricades, it has begun!

Low levels can escape and skip certain death by using portals near inns.

Minor Elementals, non elites spawns.

You will need to set up barricades located in boxes shattered all around the cities and placing X ammount of them at locations.

The locations varried from city to city, it looks like a small hunter-mark on the floor.

Be sure to grab a Earthen Ring Unbinding Totem to save your friends or NPCs thats frozen/stunned.
Easy peasy cake, aquirred from Earthen Ring Defenders spread out in the city.

------------
The big ones that hurt!
------------

Now the real invasion starts!
There will spawn rifts (yes you can get the feat of strength from this event!), for every elemental you kill the rift lose 1 hp.
Elementals hit hard and can permastun you, just pray that your friend use a totem on you there to get released.

There is also trapped citizen you need to use the totems on, inorder to free.

They can spawn inside houses, behind wierd untraveled boxes and such. can be a pain to find.

At the middle top screen, you can see how many rifts that are left in that area you currently are in, and how many more npcs you need to rescue.

Check map to see where its safe, and where theres still rifts to destroy/people needed saving.

Once you manage to stop the invasion of.. lets say Orgrimmar, you will now unlock 2 new bosses that will be up for (30 minutes?) that you can use dungeon finder to queue for. (or the portals that spawns in that town)

BUT dont forget to save Thunderbluff also! (Orgrimmar tend to be saved first, guessing its Stormwind for Alliance)
Once thunderbluff is saved you unlock 2 other bosses in the LFG, with their own timer of 30minutes befor being removed from the dungeontool, until its saved again.
If you save thunderbluff to slow, the orgrimmar bosses might have dropped from the LFG table.

---Secrets!---
Many people yell for raid, some dont understand why you even want to be in a raidgroup.
I let yah in on a secret.... buff. heals, and teamwork : D

---------------
The bosses/dungeons!
--------------

Once entered the instance you will be infront of the boss more or less.
You will have one of the faction-leaders to give you a quest for each boss and they also help out during the encounter, more or less that is.

Grand Ambassador Flamelash -> BRD-> This guy have 2 nasty things to consider.
He does a flame on the ground, basic rule, move out of fire! it hurts, almost insta-crisp.
He also spawn annoying (non-aggresive) flames that will walk towards him, but aye, aoe does make them aggresive.
No issues as long as you stay out of insta-crisp so to say.

Kai'ju Gahz'rilla -> ZF -> Frost resistance helps here, so if your a paladin, toggle ze damn resist aura!
This one have adds infront of it you want to clear.

Once in combat, the boss spits out random ice-bolts that hurts.
He will make some ice(cream) under players, just move out of it and you wont be launched in the air, simple!
He will freeze randomly (mostly tank or the one with aggro) wich will make the tank to drop aggro, dispell if you can, it also ticks for minor damage.
If your dps is moderate/slow he will after a while iceblock and refill up his HP with a huge ammount, only happens once, so just burst him down again.
Probably one of the slower bosses to kill.

Prince Sarsarun -> AQ20 -> Got a few adds to kill befor the bossfight starts.
This one will randomly spawn a tornado that knocks people up in the air if you stand in its path, and silence you, can be muliply of those out in combat at the same time.

He will do an AOE-stun that goes from around 10k-5k damage on everyone now and then. stuns for (2?) seconds. cant recall exact time. thats about it!

Crown Princess Theradras -> Mara ->
Repulsive Gaze (aoe fear) can be avoided by turning away from her shortly before the end of the cast, similar to Eadric's Radiance (from ToC5).

Standing behind the boss helps out to avoid 2 of her skills, so tank her facing away.
Dust Field, knocks them back and deals damage.
Earth Crack deals damage in a cone infront of her, got a cast-time. (nature damage, so hunters can help out here)
Also throws a rock that interrupts spellcast.
Tanks; Earth Crack can be easily avoided by strafing sidewards as soon as you see her cast it.

(thanks to Kciroj at wowhead for some of that info on Theradras)

--------------------------------------------------
How can YOU help out the non-knowing people?
--------------------------------------------------

Make 1 or 2 macros and use them now and then during the invasion.

something around the line
Macro:
/2 Invasion is on! Check your map, kill elementals, save city -> will enable 2 new instaces if you save org, and 2 other instance for saving TB, save both! -> Use dungeontool to queue for them ONCE the city is saved, no prequest or quest for this event.

I dont got the exact time for the invasion, something around 1-2hours.
You would be amazed on how many people that asks why/how/when/where.
This speed things up.

Happy elemental invasion!
and remember...
Every time an elemental invasion starts, a gnome somewhere will die atleast once during it, so enjoy!

Patch 4.0.3a Deployed, Next Phase Soon

The next phase of the pre-event (while it is not considered a part of the "elemental invasion" arc) will be launched by the end of this week. Phase "5" of the pre-event will involve the betrayal of Archbishop Benedictus and Grand Magister Rommath, the arrival of Deathwing to Stormwind and Cho'gall's assault on Orgrimmar, and the destruction of the world as we know it in the Shattering.

Our sources tell us that the Shattering (the next patch) will deploy sometime between Monday-Wednesday next week (Nov 22nd-24th), following the rest of the pre-event, which will culminate by the end of this week.

The next patch will include:

- New changes to old zones
- New quests
- New race/class combos (Not Worgen or Goblin)
- Flying mounts in Azeroth

Once again, it is strongly speculated that this patch will arrive between November 22nd to the 24th, following the culmination of the elemental invasion.

New Pets to Soon Be Added to the Blizzard Store

Blizzard has announced two new pets that will be added to the Blizzard Store "soon" (by the end of the month). Technically, there are three new pets, because there are both Alliance and Horde versions of the Moonkin Hatchling, along with the new "Mini Boss" series addition, Lil' Ragnaros

In addition, Blizzard announced that 50% of the profits made off of the pets will be donated to the Make A Wish Foundation. Compared to many other software corporations, Blizzard has been extremely generous with giving away large amounts of money to charity. When was the last time that Nintendo did something similar, for example?

Needless to say, the pets look great, and the money is going towards a good cause.

(Warlock) Bane of Havoc bug

Currently one of destro warlock abilities Bane of Havoc isn't working as intended.
As the tool tip says a warlock can only have one bane on any one target. Well that's not completely true with Bane of Havoc. If you cast it first and then replace it with Bane of Doom, then they stack. You will not see the debuff icon on a boss though but the effect of Bane of Havoc will still be there.

I have no idea how to show this on a screen shot, but you can easily test this out on a dummy. Just cast Bane of Havoc, then Bane of Doom and spam some Incinerates on another nearby dummy.

The profit of this would be to have Bane of Havoc and Bane of Doom on a boss the whole fight without having to recast it while switching to DPS adds and have the 15% damage go to boss.

Red Shirt Guy Added To World Of Warcraft

Azeroth has two new denizens: Falsted Wildhammer and his red-garbed friend, the Wildhammer Fact Checker. Blizzard added them into the new World of Warcraft expansion after a certain red shirted guy noted Falsted's absence.

WoW's Lead World Designer, Alex Afrasiabi, confirmed it:

I have included the video below of Red Shirt Guy incase you havent yet seen it.
