World of Warcraft’s Season 2 PTR spent several weeks suggesting Frost Death Knight might finally become the preferred DPS option.
Unholy has now returned from the grave to correct that misunderstanding.
The latest Midnight Season 2 Mythic+ ranking places Unholy Death Knight in S tier and describes it as a likely contender for the highest overall DPS in Patch 12.1.
Apparently being nerfed, bug-fixed and briefly declared dead was simply part of the warm-up.
Unholy Has Climbed Back to the Top
Unholy Death Knight previously looked dominant during early Patch 12.1 testing, but its performance was partly inflated by a bug.
Blizzard fixed that issue and followed it with broad damage reductions, causing the specialization to fall sharply in PTR rankings.
The original planned eight-percent overall nerf was later reduced to three percent after Blizzard accounted for the bug fix.
Further tuning has now pushed Unholy back among the strongest Season 2 options.
The current Icy Veins PTR assessment places it in S tier alongside Arms Warrior, Balance Druid and Arcane Mage.
More importantly, the ranking describes Unholy as potentially the highest-damage specialization currently being tested.
Death Knights have once again discovered that balance is merely a temporary condition between tuning passes.
The Damage Profile Is Becoming More Reliable
Blizzard’s stated goal for Patch 12.1 is to reduce the difference between Unholy’s enormous cooldown windows and its quieter periods between them.
The specialization is still built around summoning an unreasonable number of undead employees, but more of its power is being moved into sustained damage.
Necrotic Coil and Graveyard received 20% damage increases during the PTR cycle, while Lesser Ghoul damage was also increased.
Army of the Dead has been redesigned so the player commands a fixed army through Scourge Strike rather than continually adding even more creatures to the screen.
The result should be a smoother damage profile without removing the explosive burst that made Unholy valuable in the first place.
In practical terms, Unholy can still demolish priority targets while contributing strong damage outside its largest cooldowns.
The Season 2 Tier Set Adds More Execute Damage
Unholy’s new Venomous Abyss tier set is another major reason for its current position.
The set strengthens the specialization’s execute profile, giving it additional power when enemies are approaching death.
Execute damage is particularly useful in Mythic+ because dangerous bosses and priority enemies often become most threatening during their final health percentages.
A specialization that becomes stronger during those moments can shorten difficult encounters and reduce the time groups spend surviving their nastiest mechanics.
Unholy already had excellent burst and priority-target damage.
The tier set appears determined to make dying enemies regret not dying slightly faster.
Unholy Brings More Than Raw Damage
The ranking is not based entirely on damage meters.
Death Knights bring one of the strongest defensive packages available to a melee DPS specialization.
Anti-Magic Shell can trivialize or reduce dangerous magical effects, while Death’s Advance provides valuable protection against forced movement.
Death Grip and Abomination Limb can reposition enemies in ways few other classes can replicate.
That combination of survivability, control and exceptional damage makes Unholy attractive for organised Mythic+ groups.
A fragile damage dealer may look excellent on a training dummy.
Unholy can produce similar numbers while refusing to move, dragging the enemy into place and surrounding everyone with enough ghouls to create a local housing shortage.
Frost Death Knight Is Still Strong
Unholy’s return does not mean Frost Death Knight has suddenly become weak.
Frost currently sits in A+ tier and remains one of the stronger melee options on the PTR.
Patch 12.1 is shifting more Frost damage away from cooldowns and toward sustained output, while preserving its powerful burst windows.
Frost also retains the same excellent Death Knight durability and much of the class utility that makes Unholy appealing.
The problem is simply that Unholy currently appears to offer even higher damage without surrendering those advantages.
Frost may be good.
Unholy is currently making good look suspiciously ordinary.
This Could Still Be Nerfed Before Launch
The Season 2 PTR rankings are not final.
Blizzard is still applying class tuning, and a specialization described as the likely highest DPS option is an obvious candidate for another adjustment.
Unholy has already moved dramatically during this PTR cycle due to bug fixes, nerfs and later buffs.
It could move again before Patch 12.1 launches on August 11 in North America and August 12 in Europe.
Tier lists also consider specific dungeon layouts, utility and current test performance. They remain informed opinions rather than official Blizzard rankings.
Players should therefore avoid treating S tier as a permanent employment contract.
The King Is Back, for Now
Unholy Death Knight currently has nearly everything a Season 2 Mythic+ group could want.
Its damage is exceptional, its burst remains strong, its execute profile is improving and its utility can reshape difficult pulls.
Blizzard wanted to reduce the spec’s reliance on cooldowns without destroying its identity as a commander of the undead.
Based on the latest PTR performance, the company may have succeeded slightly too well.
Unholy is back in S tier.
The only question now is whether it can survive the most dangerous Season 2 enemy of all:
the next set of development notes.
