Blood Death Knights have survived worse things than a bad tier set.

They are tanks built on self-healing, stubbornness, and the quiet belief that healers are more of a suggestion than a requirement. But even Blood DK players have limits, and the first version of their Midnight Season 2 tier set appears to have found one.

Blizzard has now confirmed in the latest Patch 12.1 PTR development notes that the Blood Death Knight tier set is getting reworked. That is a pretty clear sign that the original design did not exactly land with the grace of a well-timed Death Strike.

The Original Set Leaned Hard On Crimson Scourge

The original Blood Death Knight Season 2 set bonus was built heavily around Crimson Scourge.

As shown in Wowhead’s Season 2 tier set overview, the 2-piece increased attack speed by 15% and boosted Crimson Scourge’s chance to occur by an additional 5%. The 4-piece made Crimson Scourge empower the next Death and Decay, while also granting 5% critical strike chance for 8 seconds when consumed.

On paper, that sounds like a set with a plan.

In practice, Blood DK players were not exactly throwing a parade.

Why Blood DK Players Hated The Idea

The main problem is that Crimson Scourge is not exactly the beating heart of Blood Death Knight gameplay.

It is a proc. A backup tool. Something that can be useful, yes, but not something most Blood DKs want their entire tier set built around like it is suddenly the main character.

Wowhead’s Blood DK tier set review was not gentle about it either, arguing that the original bonus missed the mark by leaning into Crimson Scourge and Death and Decay restrictions instead of giving Blood a more satisfying gameplay loop.

That criticism makes sense. A good tank tier set should make the spec feel sharper, sturdier, or more fun to pilot. It should not feel like Blizzard picked a side mechanic out of a hat and told everyone to build a season around it.

This Is Exactly What PTR Should Catch

The good news is that this is happening on the PTR, where bad ideas are supposed to get beaten up before they reach live servers.

Blizzard seeing the feedback and moving toward a rework is the right call. Blood Death Knights do not need a set that technically functions. They need one that fits how the spec actually plays.

That means rewarding active tanking decisions, not turning Crimson Scourge into a seasonal homework assignment.

Blood DK Deserves Better Than A Proc Lottery

Blood Death Knight has always had one of the strongest class identities in WoW.

It is dark, self-sufficient, risky, and deeply satisfying when played well. The best Blood gameplay feels like surviving through perfect timing and sheer undead arrogance.

A tier set should lean into that.

Not every bonus needs to be revolutionary. Not every set needs to redesign the spec. But it should at least feel like it belongs to the actual gameplay loop players enjoy.

Blizzard reworking the Blood DK set is a good sign.

Now the only question is whether the new version feels like a real tank bonus, or just another cursed little experiment wearing plate armor.
