Ula’tek was never expected to be gentle. Team Liquid needed 310 pulls just to defeat Mythic Coiled Altar and become the first guild to reach the final encounter, while Echo followed shortly afterwards. That already made the penultimate boss one of the biggest walls of the tier. The reward for getting through it is apparently a room filled with eggs that now require damage, precise movement and considerably more respect than they did on Heroic.
Mythic Ula’tek Makes the Eggs Much More Dangerous
On lower difficulties, controlling Ula’tek’s Blightscale Spawn is already central to the encounter. Caustic Waves can hatch the eggs, creating Blightscale Vipers and applying Putrid Membrane to the raid. Mythic adds another problem: the eggs begin with Hardened, an absorb shield that must be damaged through before they can even be moved. Once a player picks one up, they receive Noxious Shell, and two players carrying eggs cannot simply wander into each other. Moving within three yards of another egg carrier triggers Noxious Splash, instantly hatching the egg and dealing heavy damage to the carrier.
According to the live Ula’tek encounter information, a Viper that successfully hatches applies Putrid Membrane to every player, dealing Nature damage every second for one hour. The effect stacks. That does not mean your character is sentenced to an actual hour of raid progression after one mistake; encounter resets obviously remain encounter resets. What it does mean is that during a successful attempt, an unnecessary hatch becomes persistent additional healing pressure instead of a short mistake that simply disappears twenty seconds later.
And Ula’tek was already unusually demanding before Mythic. We saw Heroic Ula’tek survive for days before QingShui secured the first kill, and only 231 guilds worldwide managed to defeat Heroic Ula’tek during the opening week. Mythic is taking the central mechanic from that encounter and removing much of the room for sloppy recovery.
Phase Two Adds Even More Egg Management
The problems do not stop with the opening phase. Early Race to World First observations show considerably more egg management during the later portions of the encounter, while Doomscale Wardens complicate positioning and add control. The Mythic encounter journal confirms that Wardens can protect nearby eggs, preventing players from interacting with them while the Warden remains alive, while Writhing Gestation can transform nearby Blightscale Spawn into dangerous clutches that eventually hatch.
That creates exactly the kind of final-boss puzzle top guilds spend hundreds of pulls slowly dismantling. Damage cannot simply be thrown into Ula’tek. Players need enough damage to remove Hardened from the correct eggs, enough coordination to move them without triggering Noxious Splash, enough add control to keep later mechanics contained and enough healing to survive whatever mistakes remain. One uncontrolled hatch does not necessarily end the pull immediately. In some ways, that is worse. It simply makes everything afterwards harder.
The Race to World First Is Now About Ula’tek
At the time of writing, Mythic Ula’tek is still alive. That means the exact strategies, compositions and progression numbers will continue changing as Liquid, Echo, Method and the rest of the leading guilds discover how much of the encounter can actually be optimized. After the enormous amount of gearing required before Liquid even committed properly to Mythic progression, the final boss is where all of that preparation finally has to pay for itself.
The rewards are certainly appropriate for the difficulty. Ula’tek drops the Slumbering Coil Curio omni-token that can become any Season 2 tier piece, while Mythic loot from Ula’tek can reach the extraordinary late-boss item levels we covered in our Season 2 Great Vault and Bonus Roll breakdown.
For everyone who is not currently being paid to move radioactive snake eggs around a Mythic raid arena, there is at least some comfort. Blizzard has already confirmed that The Venomous Abyss will gradually become easier as Season 2 progresses.
Liquid and Echo do not have that luxury.
They have eggs.
Lots of eggs.
