World of Warcraft players have already begun planning the first Great Vault of Midnight Season 2.

Complete enough activities.

Unlock several choices.

Open the Vault.

Stare at three disappointing items and select the useful consolation prize instead.

There is one problem with that plan.

Voidcore bonus rolls will not be available from the first Season 2 Great Vault.

They arrive one week later, on August 25, and players must unlock at least three Vault panes before they can select one.

Blizzard has therefore removed one of the most obvious early-season strategies: deliberately rejecting the first week’s lower-level gear in favour of a more flexible bonus roll.

The First Season 2 Vault Opens on August 18

Patch 12.1 launches during the week of August 11 and begins a one-week pre-season period.

Activities completed during that week generate credit for the first actual Season 2 Great Vault.

Those rewards become available with the weekly reset on August 18.

The Vault visible immediately after Patch 12.1 launches still contains rewards earned during the final week of Season 1.

This distinction matters.

Season 2 Vault progress begins during pre-season, but the reward cannot be claimed until the following reset.

Players who ignore the pre-season week entirely may therefore open Season 2 with very few Vault choices.

The game is giving everyone a quiet preparation week.

It is not giving anyone permission to spend seven days comparing wallpaper.

No Voidcore Option in the First Vault

Blizzard has confirmed that Voidcore bonus rolls will not be offered when players open the first Season 2 Vault on August 18.

The option becomes available with the second Season 2 Vault on August 25.

This changes how players should approach the first week.

Without a Voidcore option, the first Vault effectively asks players to choose between one available item and the usual alternative rewards offered when no gear is selected.

Players cannot simply unlock several weak choices and convert the entire Vault into an immediate bonus-roll opportunity.

That strategy must wait another week.

Why Players Wanted the Bonus Roll

Voidcores can be used as bonus rolls after eligible endgame activities.

This gives players another chance at loot from a specific source rather than accepting a random Vault item.

The system is especially attractive when targeting raid weapons, powerful trinkets or another unusually valuable drop.

A random Vault choice may be technically useful.

A Voidcore gives the player some control over where the next attempt happens.

That control is extremely valuable at the beginning of a season, when many available upgrades compete for attention.

Some players therefore planned to skip their first Season 2 Vault item unless it contained tier gear or an exceptional trinket.

Blizzard’s schedule prevents that choice during the opening week.

The Vault is insisting that players examine its gifts before immediately asking for store credit.

You Need Three Vault Panes From August 25

When Voidcores become available on August 25, players must have unlocked at least three Great Vault panes during the same week.

A pane is one individual reward slot inside the Vault.

It does not matter whether the three panes come from the same activity row or are spread across Raid, Dungeons and World content.

The requirement is based on the total number of unlocked choices.

Unlocking one excellent Mythic+ pane will not be enough.

Unlocking two mediocre choices will not be enough either.

Players who want the Voidcore option need at least three completed Vault objectives.

This encourages broader participation or deeper investment in one activity row.

It also means the bonus roll is not a free reward for completing one convenient weekly task.

Plan Three Achievable Objectives

The safest strategy is to identify three Vault objectives the character can complete without relying on an uncertain group.

For some players, that may mean several Mythic+ runs.

For others, it could combine raid bosses, dungeon completions and World-row activities.

The exact route matters less than completing enough objectives before the weekly reset.

Players should avoid reaching Monday evening with two unlocked panes and a detailed theory about how quickly strangers will clear six raid bosses.

The Great Vault does not accept good intentions.

It accepts completed activities.

The First World Row Is Also Capped

The missing Voidcore is not the only restriction affecting the first Season 2 Vault.

During the opening Vault on August 18, rewards from the World row are capped at Champion 3/6.

Later Season 2 Vaults can offer World-row rewards up to Hero 1/6.

This means players focusing heavily on Delves and outdoor content should expect a lower maximum reward from the first Vault than they can earn in later weeks.

The restriction reflects the limited pre-season activity available before August 18.

Bountiful Delves, Coffer Keys, Nightmare Prey and several higher reward sources do not activate until Season 2 officially begins.

The first Vault is therefore based on a deliberately restricted week.

It should not be mistaken for the normal Season 2 reward ceiling.

Champion 3/6 Can Still Be Useful

A Champion 3/6 World reward is not automatically worthless.

It can provide a strong early upgrade for alts, characters carrying weaker Season 1 items or players primarily progressing through solo content.

The item may also be tier gear because unlocked Great Vault slots can offer tier pieces regardless of which activity row generated them.

That possibility gives the first Vault additional value.

A moderate item-level tier piece can complete an early two-piece bonus and remain useful longer than an ordinary item with slightly more raw stats.

Players should therefore evaluate the actual reward rather than dismissing the World row because a future version can reach Hero track.

The first Vault may be limited.

It can still be generous by accident.

Tier Gear Is the Obvious Opening-Week Prize

Because Voidcores are unavailable, tier gear becomes one of the strongest possible first-Vault outcomes.

An early tier piece can accelerate progress toward the two-piece and four-piece bonuses before Catalyst charges become plentiful.

The Great Vault can provide tier from Dungeon and World slots, not only from the Raid row.

This makes unlocking several panes worthwhile even when their listed activity rewards do not appear spectacular.

Every additional pane is another chance for the Vault to produce something much better than the activity’s ordinary loot table suggests.

It is also another chance to receive three belts.

Both outcomes remain part of the system.

Powerful Trinkets May Be Worth Taking Immediately

The other major exception is an unusually strong weapon or trinket.

Players should not reject a rare best-in-slot item simply because bonus rolls become available the following week.

A guaranteed valuable reward is generally better than another chance at something valuable later.

This is especially true for items from large loot tables or difficult sources.

The Voidcore offers targeted opportunity.

It does not guarantee success.

The Great Vault item is already sitting there.

It has survived the weekly lottery and somehow selected your character.

Do not send it away merely because a guide described another item as 0.4% stronger under perfect conditions.

Do Not Overfarm the Pre-Season Vault

The first Vault is useful, but players should keep its limitations in mind when deciding how much activity to complete during pre-season.

Mythic+ is not available until August 18.

Mythic 0 operates on a weekly lockout during pre-season.

Bountiful Delves are unavailable, and ordinary Delve rewards are capped below the levels available once the season begins.

This limits both the available objectives and the quality of some rewards.

Unlock enough panes to give the character reasonable choices.

Do not turn pre-season into a desperate attempt to produce a perfect Vault that the system has deliberately prevented from becoming perfect.

The Better Bonus-Roll Strategy Starts in Week Two

The more important preparation begins after Season 2 officially launches.

Activities completed between August 18 and August 25 generate the second Season 2 Vault.

That is the first Vault capable of offering a Voidcore.

Players planning to use the bonus-roll option should unlock at least three panes during that week.

This is also when Mythic+, the Venomous Abyss raid, Bountiful Delves and the full Season 2 progression systems become available.

As a result, both the Vault choices and the possible Voidcore targets become considerably stronger.

The system is effectively delaying the strategic Vault choice until players have access to the actual season.

Your First Two Vault Weeks at a Glance

  • Complete pre-season activities during the week of August 11 to earn the first Season 2 Vault.
  • Open that Vault on August 18.
  • Do not expect a Voidcore option on August 18.
  • Expect the first World-row rewards to be capped at Champion 3/6.
  • Complete at least three Vault objectives between August 18 and August 25.
  • Open the second Season 2 Vault on August 25.
  • Select a Voidcore if the unlocked items are less valuable than a targeted bonus-roll opportunity.

The First Vault Is Weaker, Not Worthless

WoW’s first Season 2 Great Vault arrives with two important restrictions.

Voidcore bonus rolls are unavailable, and the World row cannot exceed Champion 3/6.

Neither restriction makes the Vault irrelevant.

Players can still receive useful upgrades, valuable trinkets and early tier pieces.

They simply cannot use the first Vault as an immediate bonus-roll vending machine.

That option begins on August 25 and requires at least three unlocked panes.

Complete enough pre-season content to create real choices.

Take a genuinely strong item if the Vault offers one.

Then prepare three objectives for the following week.

The first Vault may disappoint you in the traditional way.

Blizzard has merely removed one of the escape routes.
