World of Warcraft: Midnight launched less than six months ago. Patch 12.1: Curse of Ula’tek has literally just arrived. And Blizzard has decided this is apparently an excellent time to put the expansion on sale. Midnight is now available with up to 40 percent off as part of Blizzard's latest round of Battle.net deals, giving anyone who skipped the expansion at launch a considerably cheaper way into Azeroth just as Season 2 is about to begin. Subtle timing. Very subtle.

Midnight Is Up to 40% Off

The promotion covers all three editions of World of Warcraft: Midnight:
  • Base Edition
  • Heroic Edition
  • Epic Edition
Blizzard advertises savings of up to 40 percent across the expansion, with the Midnight promotion running through September 13 before ending the following morning according to Battle.net's regional store timing. That makes this one of the most aggressive discounts we've seen on Midnight since its March release. And the timing clearly isn't accidental. Patch 12.1: Curse of Ula’tek is now live, adding the Coiled Isle, new Housing features, Lairs, Delves and the setup for Midnight Season 2. Season 2 itself begins next week. If Blizzard wanted a moment to drag lapsed players back through the portal, this is probably it.

Character Services Are Also Discounted

The sale isn't limited to the expansion. Selected World of Warcraft Character Services are discounted by up to 33 percent through August 25. That includes services intended for modern World of Warcraft, although Blizzard notes that characters cannot be transferred between modern WoW and Classic. So no, you still cannot solve twenty years of character history by simply throwing your 2007 Warrior through a dimensional customs office.

The Old Warcraft Games Are 50% Off Too

Blizzard is also discounting several Warcraft strategy titles by 50 percent during the wider August Game Deals promotion. That gives players a relatively inexpensive excuse to revisit the games where much of Warcraft's story actually began. Which is mildly amusing considering modern WoW increasingly expects you to recognize characters, kingdoms and historical events first introduced when computer monitors weighed approximately the same as a small horse.

This Is a Smart Moment to Discount Midnight

Putting Midnight on sale immediately as Patch 12.1 launches makes a lot of sense. The expansion is no longer in that awkward early period where new players arrive months behind everyone else. The seasonal reset gives returning players a natural entry point. Season 1 gear is being replaced. Mythic+ ratings effectively start fresh. A new raid is arriving. And the new dungeon pool means everyone is relearning at least some of the endgame together. In other words, someone buying Midnight today isn't trying to catch a train that left the station in March. Blizzard has brought another one around.

Midnight Has Entered Its “Come Back, We Added Stuff” Phase

Every WoW expansion eventually reaches this moment. Launch hype has settled. The first season is finished. The people who were going to buy it immediately already did. Now the pitch changes. Look at all the things we've added. Look at the new season. Look at the 40 percent discount. Please ignore how many hours Housing will consume once you discover Blueprints. For anyone already playing Midnight, the sale obviously changes very little. But for someone who skipped launch, quit during Season 1 or has been waiting for a cheaper entry point, the combination of Patch 12.1, Season 2 and a substantial discount makes this a very deliberate invitation back to Azeroth. Blizzard has opened the door. And, for the next month, apparently marked it down 40 percent. Source: Blizzard Entertainment
