Getting a 318 Myth-track item from a Season 2 Bonus Roll feels good. Immediately spending 20 precious Myth Mistcrests to upgrade it feels slightly less good. Fortunately, World of Warcraft's gear upgrade system contains a very useful overlap that can let you take that 318 Myth 1/6 item to item level 321 without spending any Myth Mistcrests at all. The trick is simple: upgrade a Hero item in the same equipment slot to Hero 6/6 first.

This matters considerably more now that Nebulous Voidcores are available through the Season 2 Great Vault and players can use them to target additional Myth-track gear. A Heroic raid Bonus Roll or eligible +10 Mythic+ Bonus Roll can produce item level 318 Myth 1/6 gear. Before immediately feeding that new item Myth Mistcrests, however, check what you already own in the same slot.

Hero 6/6 and Myth 2/6 Are Both Item Level 321

The trick works because Season 2's upgrade tracks deliberately overlap. Hero 5/6 is item level 318, exactly matching Myth 1/6. Hero 6/6 reaches item level 321, exactly matching Myth 2/6. Blizzard's upgrade system also remembers the highest item level your character has reached in each equipment slot. Once that slot has reached a particular item level, another item in the same slot can normally be upgraded to that level without paying additional Mistcrests.

So imagine your Bonus Roll gives you a shiny new 318 Myth 1/6 pair of gloves. You also own Hero-track gloves sitting at 318 Hero 5/6. You have two options. You can immediately upgrade the Myth gloves to 321 Myth 2/6 and spend 20 Myth Mistcrests. Or you can first spend 20 Hero Mistcrests upgrading the Hero gloves from 318 to 321. That establishes item level 321 as your glove-slot watermark. Put the Myth gloves into the upgrader afterwards and their 318-to-321 upgrade no longer requires Myth Mistcrests.

You have effectively spent Hero Mistcrests to save Myth Mistcrests. Nothing is being converted, and this is not an exploit. It is simply the normal slot-based upgrade discount interacting with the overlap between the Hero and Myth tracks. The current Season 2 upgrade table confirms the important breakpoint: Hero 6/6 and Myth 2/6 both land at 321.

Why Saving 20 Myth Mistcrests Actually Matters

Twenty crests may not sound dramatic until you look at the entire upgrade bill. Season 2 uses a flat 20 Mistcrests per upgrade rank, meaning taking a normal Myth 1/6 item from 318 all the way to Myth 6/6 at 334 costs 100 Myth Mistcrests. We covered that cost when Blizzard revealed the Season 2 Mistcrest upgrade structure. Saving the first 20 therefore removes one fifth of the normal Myth-track crest cost.

That becomes even more valuable because Myth Mistcrests are one of the currencies high-end players are actively trying to maximize. We have already seen Azta'rec become valuable because his reward can push players beyond the normal weekly Mistcrest cap, while Race to World First guilds spent days squeezing every possible gearing advantage out of the opening week. When Liquid spent roughly five and a half days preparing before serious Mythic progression, crest efficiency was part of exactly this kind of optimization.

Be Careful With Rings, Trinkets and One-Handed Weapons

There is an important exception. Rings, trinkets and one-handed weapon setups have two relevant equipment positions, so the system looks at the lower of your two item levels when determining the discount. One 321 ring and one 318 ring does not establish a 321 watermark for both ring slots. The same applies to trinkets and one-handed weapons. You generally need both relevant slots at the target item level before assuming the replacement upgrade will be crest-free.

This is especially worth remembering with trinkets because Season 2 contains plenty of newly tuned trinkets worth chasing, and Bonus Rolls are particularly attractive when a specific raid boss holds your best option. Blizzard already cut Season 2 raid Bonus Rolls from two Voidcores to just one, making repeated targeted attempts much easier to justify.

Check Your Hero Gear Before Upgrading Any 318 Myth Item

The practical rule is therefore extremely simple. Whenever you receive a 318 Myth 1/6 item, do not automatically click Upgrade.

First check whether you have Hero 5/6 gear in the same slot. If you do, taking that Hero item from 318 to 321 with Hero Mistcrests can establish the watermark that makes the first Myth upgrade free. This is particularly relevant for players using the Season 2 strategy of choosing targeted Bonus Rolls instead of automatically taking Great Vault gear, because Heroic raid and high Mythic+ rolls are now regularly putting fresh Myth 1/6 items into players' bags.

Season 2 gearing contains enough currencies, tracks, rolls and weekly decisions already.

You may as well make Blizzard pay for one of the upgrades.
