Patch 12.1 has given World of Warcraft players a new island, new dungeons, new currencies and several fresh opportunities to spend an evening comparing tooltips.
But some of the easiest Season 2 gear is hiding somewhere considerably less exotic.
At the same Renown vendors we've been visiting since Midnight launched.
Blizzard has reset four of Midnight's original Renown gear quests for Season 2, allowing eligible characters to earn four pieces of
item level 279 Veteran gear simply by completing the expansion's old world events again.
For mains swimming in Season 1 Myth gear, that may not sound revolutionary.
For alts and returning characters, it is practically a shopping list.
The Four Renown Gear Quests Are Back
Each of Midnight's four original major factions has one refreshed gearing quest.
The requirements are the same familiar Renown breakpoints:
- The Singularity, Renown 7: Complete a Stormarion Assault for the Crucible of Erratic Energies trinket.
- The Hara'ti, Renown 8: Complete part of Legends of the Haranir for a waist item.
- Silvermoon Court, Renown 9: Complete Saltheril's Soiree for a helm.
- Amani Tribe, Renown 9: Complete Abundance for a necklace, with two secondary-stat choices.
The Season 2 versions reward Veteran-track equipment rather than the Champion pieces originally available before Season 1.
The important part is that these quests have reset.
Even if your main completed them months ago, the Season 2 versions can become available again.
Apparently reputation vendors also believe in sequels.
The Crucible Trinket Is the One to Check First
The most interesting reward is probably
Crucible of Erratic Energies from The Singularity.
Players who remember Midnight's launch will remember this thing rather well.
The Crucible became an unusually strong early-season trinket because its proc provides Critical Strike alongside other benefits, and Blizzard ended up tuning it during Season 1.
It is back as Veteran gear for Season 2.
That does not automatically make it best-in-slot again, especially after the latest trinket tuning, but it makes the quest particularly worth checking on an alt whose current trinkets date from the archaeological period.
We just looked at Blizzard's latest Season 2 trinket tuning, including another reduction to Crucible of Erratic Energies.
So sim before becoming emotionally attached.
Again.
These Are Perfect Alt Catch-Up Rewards
The real appeal here is efficiency.
There is no dungeon RNG.
No raid lockout.
No hoping the correct item appears in a cache.
If your character already has the required Renown, you simply pick up the appropriate quest and complete the associated world event.
Stormarion Assault, Legends of the Haranir, Saltheril's Soiree and Abundance are all established Midnight activities, so most veteran players already know how they work.
For a neglected alt entering Season 2 in mismatched Season 1 leftovers, four guaranteed Veteran pieces can clean up several weak slots very quickly.
Don’t Expect Them to Replace Proper Season 2 Gear
There is an obvious ceiling.
These are Veteran-track items.
Season 2 quickly moves beyond that through Mythic 0, Bountiful Delves, raids and Mythic+. The Venomous Abyss alone begins dropping Champion gear in Normal and Hero gear in Heroic once Season 2 opens.
So this is not a secret route to endgame best-in-slot equipment.
It is catch-up gear.
Good, predictable, nearly free catch-up gear.
That distinction matters.
Check the Old Vendors Before Grinding Something Harder
Season 2 officially begins next week, and players are naturally preparing elaborate gearing routes involving Delves, Mythic dungeons, Sparks, Vault slots and enough upgrade currencies to require an accounting department.
Before doing all of that, visit the old Renown vendors.
You may already have four upgrades waiting behind quests you finished once before.
World of Warcraft has spent twenty years teaching us that the newest content contains the newest gear.
Patch 12.1 has added an important footnote:
Sometimes the new gear is being sold by the same person you've been ignoring since March.
