World of Warcraft Patch 12.1 launches on August 11 in North America and August 12 in Europe.
Midnight Season 2 does not properly begin until one week later.
That sounds simple enough.
Unfortunately, Blizzard has split the transition across PvP deadlines, old Great Vault rewards, new Great Vault credit, weekly Mythic 0 lockouts, early Crafting Sparks and delayed Voidcores.
The result is a pre-season week containing just enough Season 2 systems to make players assume everything is active.
It is not.
Season 1 Ends When Patch Maintenance Begins
Most Midnight Season 1 activities remain available until Patch 12.1 maintenance begins.
That includes Season 1 Mythic+ dungeons and raid achievements such as Ahead of the Curve and Cutting Edge.
European players therefore have until maintenance begins on Wednesday, August 12, to finish most remaining Season 1 goals.
Mythic+ percentile cutoffs and seasonal title eligibility will be calculated when the realms enter maintenance.
Anyone chasing a final rating increase should not treat August 19 as the deadline.
That is when Season 2 begins.
Season 1 will already have been dead for a week.
PvP Season 1 Ends Earlier Than Everything Else
Competitive PvP has a slightly different deadline.
Blizzard says Midnight PvP Season 1 ends at 10:00 PM local realm time on the evening before Patch 12.1 maintenance begins.
That means rated PvP closes before most other Season 1 content.
Players attempting one final rating push should therefore not assume they can queue until the servers go offline.
The arena doors close first.
The maintenance screen merely arrives later to remove the evidence.
The August 12 Vault Still Contains Season 1 Rewards
The Great Vault available when Patch 12.1 launches will be based on activities completed during the final week of Season 1.
It will therefore still offer Season 1 rewards.
This is important because Season 2 Great Vault credit begins accumulating immediately during the pre-season week.
Players can claim an old-season reward and then begin working toward their first Season 2 Vault on the same day.
The first Season 2 Great Vault rewards become available when the full season begins the following week, on August 18 in North America and August 19 in Europe.
The Vault is essentially operating in two seasons at once.
One is paying out.
The other is already taking attendance.
Crafting Sparks Start Dropping During Pre-Season
Season 2 Crafting Sparks begin dropping during the Patch 12.1 pre-season week.
Players do not need to wait for the raid or Mythic+ season to begin accumulating the new crafting currency.
This gives crafters an early start on Season 2 equipment, although expensive items may still require several Sparks.
Players should be careful about rushing into a craft simply because the first Spark appears.
Weapon choices, embellishment tuning and early-season balance can all change the relative value of crafted items.
The Spark is available early.
That does not mean it must be converted immediately into the first pair of boots offered by someone shouting in trade chat.
Voidcores Do Not Appear in the First Season 2 Vault
Voidcore bonus rolls are delayed.
They will not be available in the first Season 2 Great Vault on August 18 or 19.
Voidcores begin appearing with the second Season 2 Vault on August 25 in North America and August 26 in Europe.
Players must also have unlocked at least three Great Vault panes before selecting one.
This creates a slightly awkward opening week.
Players can begin earning Season 2 gear immediately, but the bonus-roll system designed to target additional loot arrives one Vault later.
Do not open the first Season 2 Vault expecting a Voidcore option.
The button has not forgotten you.
It simply has another week off.
Mythic 0 Has a Weekly Lockout During Pre-Season
The complete Season 2 dungeon rotation becomes available on Heroic and Mythic 0 difficulty during the pre-season week.
This includes the new Altar of Fangs dungeon alongside the returning and existing Season 2 instances.
Mythic 0 rewards Champion 1/6 gear during this week.
However, every dungeon uses a weekly lockout.
Players can therefore complete each Mythic 0 once for loot before the August 18 or 19 reset.
When Season 2 officially begins, Mythic 0 changes back to a daily lockout and Mythic Keystones become available.
Anyone planning to repeatedly farm one preferred dungeon during pre-season will discover that Blizzard has already placed a small locked gate in front of the plan.
Mythic+ Does Not Begin With Patch 12.1
Patch 12.1 activates the new dungeon pool, but Mythic+ remains unavailable during the first week.
Keystones begin dropping when Season 2 starts on August 18 in North America and August 19 in Europe.
The pre-season week is therefore intended for learning dungeon routes, collecting Mythic 0 gear and discovering which returning boss mechanic everyone has forgotten.
No rating can be earned.
No Season 2 keys can be pushed.
The enemies will still possess their recently increased health.
They simply will not provide a score for surviving longer.
The Raid Also Waits One Week
The Venomous Abyss does not open when Patch 12.1 launches.
Normal, Heroic, Mythic and Raid Finder Wing 1 all become available with Season 2 the following week.
Tidebound Grotto is handled differently.
Its World difficulty becomes available during pre-season and drops Season 2 Veteran gear.
Normal, Heroic and flexible Mythic difficulties open alongside the raid on August 18 and 19.
This gives players one early Lair encounter while keeping the main raid progression locked until the full season begins.
Delves Are Available but Bountiful Delves Are Not
Delve difficulties 1 through 11 become available during pre-season, along with the single-question-mark Nemesis difficulty.
Bountiful Delves and Coffer Keys do not begin until Season 2 starts.
Pre-season Delve rewards are capped at Adventurer 3/6 gear and Veteran Crests.
When the full season begins, Bountiful Delves appear, Keys begin dropping and the double-question-mark Nemesis difficulty becomes available.
Players defeating that difficulty during the first proper Season 2 week can earn the Fabled Let Me Solo Him: Azta’rec achievement.
Pre-season Delves are therefore useful for exploration and early progression.
They are not yet operating at full reward capacity.
Prey Has Its Own Staggered Launch
Normal and Hard Prey activities become available during the Patch 12.1 pre-season.
Hard Prey can award Season 2 Veteran gear.
Nightmare Prey does not unlock until Season 2 officially begins, at which point it can award Champion gear.
This is another system that looks active during the first week but is missing its highest difficulty and best rewards.
Patch week is not empty.
It is simply full of partially opened doors.
The First World-Row Vault Is Capped Lower
The first Season 2 Great Vault has an additional restriction.
Rewards from the World row can reach a maximum of Champion 3/6.
Future Season 2 Vaults can provide World-row rewards up to Hero 1/6.
This prevents the first week’s outdoor activities and limited Delve options from immediately producing the highest possible World-row rewards.
Players filling several World panes should therefore expect the first payout to be slightly weaker than later weeks.
The Simple Week-by-Week Plan
Before August 12 in Europe:
Finish Season 1 Mythic+, raid achievements and other limited rewards. Rated PvP ends at 10:00 PM the night before maintenance.
August 12 to August 19:
Claim the final Season 1 Great Vault reward. Begin earning Season 2 Vault credit and Crafting Sparks. Run every Season 2 Mythic 0 once. Explore Delves, Prey, outdoor activities and World-difficulty Tidebound Grotto.
From August 19:
Begin Mythic+, rated PvP and Venomous Abyss progression. Mythic 0 returns to a daily lockout. Bountiful Delves, Keys, Nightmare Prey and the harder Lair difficulties become available. Claim the first Season 2 Great Vault.
From August 26 in Europe:
Voidcore bonus rolls begin appearing as Great Vault options for players with at least three unlocked panes.
Patch Week Is Not Season Week
The most important lesson is simple.
Patch 12.1 launching does not mean every Season 2 system is active.
The first week provides new content, new gear, new Sparks and new Vault credit.
It does not provide Mythic+, rated PvP, the raid, Bountiful Delves or Voidcores.
Players who understand the split can use the pre-season efficiently.
Everyone else may spend several minutes asking why their Keystone, bonus roll and Bountiful Delve have all independently failed to appear.
Blizzard’s calendar contains the dates.
It merely expects players to assemble them into a working instruction manual.
