Wrath of the Lich King Timewalking is back.
Normally that means nostalgia, Timewarped Badges and discovering that somebody in your group still remembers exactly where to jump in a dungeon released in 2008.
This week it also means Midnight Season 2 tier gear.
Blizzard has updated the reward from A Frozen Path Through Time, and the resulting Cache of Amani Treasures can now contain Season 2 tier tokens.
That makes this week's Wrath Timewalking event considerably more valuable than the usual trip through Northrend.
Your Timewalking Weekly Can Now Give Tier
The important reward comes from the weekly quest A Frozen Path Through Time.
Max-level characters can pick up the quest in Silvermoon City or through the Adventure Journal and complete it by defeating five eligible Timewalking raid bosses or dungeons.
The reward is a Cache of Amani Treasures.
That cache normally provides Champion-track Season 2 gear, but the latest Wrath Timewalking event has added Season 2 tier tokens to its possible rewards.
In other words, five trips into old Northrend content can now potentially solve a very modern gearing problem.
Arthas continues to provide services long after leaving management.
This Is Especially Good for Alts
The timing could hardly be better.
We are still early enough in Midnight Season 2 that many characters are missing pieces of their four-piece set bonus.
That is especially true for alts that have not been clearing The Venomous Abyss every week.
We have already seen Blizzard make substantial changes to Season 2 tier sets and their tuning, and several specs gain a very meaningful amount of power once their set bonuses come online.
A Timewalking cache obviously does not guarantee the exact tier piece you need.
But it adds another relatively accessible chance at tier without requiring Mythic raiding or high-end Mythic+ progression.
If you have several characters sitting at two or three set pieces, this weekly is suddenly much harder to ignore.
Ulduar Has Another Hero-Track Reward
The dungeon weekly is not the only useful reward available during Wrath Timewalking.
Players can also complete Disturbance Detected: Ulduar.
The quest requires defeating Yogg-Saron in the Timewalking version of Ulduar and rewards a Cache of Timewarped Treasures.
That cache contains Hero-track equipment scaled to the current season and can also contain additional Wrath-themed rewards.
So there are effectively two separate gearing opportunities this week:
- A Frozen Path Through Time – Champion-track cache with a chance at Season 2 tier tokens.
- Disturbance Detected: Ulduar – Hero-track Cache of Timewarped Treasures.
If your character still has weak slots, doing both is a fairly compelling use of an evening.
Six Wrath Dungeons Are in the Rotation
The current Northrend Timewalking pool includes six dungeons:
- Azjol-Nerub
- The Forge of Souls
- Gundrak
- Halls of Lightning
- The Nexus
- Utgarde Keep
Timewalking also continues to award Timewarped Badges, including the large first weekly bonus from The Unstable Prism.
There is therefore plenty of old cosmetic shopping attached to the event even if the tier token refuses to appear.
You Also Get 50% More Wrath Reputation
For players who somehow still have unfinished business in Northrend, the event provides another useful bonus.
Wrath of the Lich King reputations receive a 50% reputation increase from quests and creature kills while the event is active.
That makes this a particularly good week to finish old reputation grinds while also working toward the modern weekly reward.
It is efficient.
Which is a slightly disturbing word to use while voluntarily returning to Sons of Hodir reputation.
Do the Weekly Before You Ignore Timewalking
Timewalking is often easy to dismiss once a character no longer needs basic catch-up gear.
This week is different.
Season 2 tier tokens fundamentally change the value of the weekly cache.
They also fit neatly into the broader Season 2 gearing picture, where players are already juggling raid drops, Mythic+, crafted gear and the new Great Vault option to take a Nebulous Voidcore instead of mediocre gear.
You still might open the Timewalking cache and receive something utterly unhelpful.
This is World of Warcraft.
The loot box has traditions.
But when a relatively simple weekly quest can potentially hand you a missing Season 2 tier piece, it is worth giving Northrend five more dungeons of your time.
