World of Warcraft: Forever looks familiar enough that a returning Classic player can log in and start moving without a tutorial. That is also the easiest way to miss half of what Blizzard has changed. Forever keeps the slower 1-to-60 journey, dangerous outdoor mobs, faction separation and social friction of old Azeroth, but it layers modern interface tools, new progression systems, new dungeons, reworked professions and discovery-focused loot on top.

This guide is built for the player asking the most useful question: what should I actually do first? It focuses on decisions that matter early, mistakes that waste time or gold, and systems worth learning before you reach the point where every bag contains three quest items, four profession reagents and one grey object you are emotionally unwilling to sell.

Beta note: WoW Forever is still being tested. Exact values, individual rewards and some interface details can change. The broader systems and beginner strategy below reflect the current beta and Blizzard’s announced launch direction.

WoW Forever Quick Start: The Short Version

●     Choose your ruleset carefully before worrying about server names. Forever uses large ruleset ecosystems instead of traditional realms.

●     Pick a class you actually want to level. Forever is built around the journey, not rushing past it.

●     Turn on the modern UI tools you like, but do not install twenty addons before you know what the base client already provides.

●     Quest in the open world. Dungeon quests are valuable, but repeated dungeon grinding has been deliberately weakened.

●     Train professions early. Gathering, crafting, First Aid and Cooking matter much sooner than they do in modern WoW.

●     Do not waste gold trying to look rich at level 18. Training, bags, professions and travel will eat it happily.

●     Group with players who need the same mobs. Forever keeps contested tagging on purpose.

●     Read strange loot before vendoring it. Forever contains reworked items, hidden interactions and cross-level sets.

●     Use the Legacy System as a long-term bonus, not as a checklist you must finish immediately.

●     Remember that level 60 is the destination, but Forever is designed so the road is part of the game.

1. Choose the Right Ruleset First

The first unusual decision in Forever is not which realm to join. Traditional realm selection is largely gone. Instead, you choose a ruleset such as Normal, PvP or Roleplaying and enter a much larger connected population. Hardcore arrives separately and is intentionally isolated from the other ecosystems.

For a new player, Normal is the safest default. Choose PvP because you genuinely want contested-zone fights, not because somebody told you it is the authentic option. Forever already has enough ways for a quest to go wrong without voluntarily adding a Rogue behind the nearest tree.

Our full explanation of Forever’s realmless structure and two-part character names is worth reading before launch, because the change affects naming, communities and how you find other players.

Forever replaces the old realm-picking ritual with large ruleset-based player ecosystems.

2. Pick a Class for the Journey, Not the Tier List

Forever is not modern WoW with a Classic coat of paint. Ordinary enemies take longer to kill, downtime matters, crowd control returns to dungeons and travel remains part of progression. That makes class feel important before endgame.

Hunters remain excellent solo levelers because pets create distance and safety, although Blizzard is restoring the intended Auto Shot movement delay. Mages bring control, portals and strong group utility. Paladins and Druids trade raw leveling speed for flexibility. Warriors become monsters with gear but can feel considerably less heroic when fighting two orange-level mobs with a grey weapon.

Do not choose purely from a launch-week DPS chart. Forever’s balance will change, its content is permanent, and the Legacy System actively encourages players to level more than one character over time.

What About the Skyborne?

The Skyborne are Forever’s new playable race with their own Zephras Isle starting experience. They are not required to play Forever, and the base game is included with normal WoW subscription or Game Time. Access to the Skyborne race is currently tied to a paid upgrade, so treat them as an optional starting route rather than the default beginner choice.

Character creation includes expanded race/class options, HD models and Forever’s new two-part naming system.

3. Set Up the Interface Before You Start Collecting Addons

One of Forever’s biggest beginner advantages is that the base client already includes tools Classic players historically installed addons to obtain. Combined bags, reagent storage, equipment sets, a searchable quest log, pings, a damage meter, cooldown management and a swing timer are all part of the modernized interface.

That does not make addons useless. It does mean you should play for a while before rebuilding the cockpit of a commercial airliner around your level 6 Priest. Forever also inherits modern restrictions on computational combat addons, so tools can customize and display information without automatically solving every encounter for you.

The sensible approach is simple: enable the built-in functions you understand, keep the screen readable, and add third-party tools only when you can name the problem they solve.

4. Level Through the World, Not by Living in a Dungeon

If you come from Classic optimization culture, this may be the most important beginner tip in the entire guide: Blizzard does not want dungeon grinding to become the best leveling route.

Dungeon mob experience has been reduced while dungeon quest rewards have been increased. Your first trip through an instance should be excellent. Collect the quests, assemble a group, learn the route, kill the bosses and cash in a large chunk of experience. Then go back outside instead of immediately performing the same clear twelve more times.

Forever is adding more than 1,000 quests, expanded regions and new leveling zones precisely because Blizzard wants the outdoor world populated. Following quest chains also exposes you to professions, rare mobs, camps, unusual loot and the social encounters Forever is built around.

New dungeons are important, but repeated dungeon grinding is deliberately less efficient than quest-focused first clears.

5. Train Professions Early

Do not leave professions until level 60. Forever adds more than 600 recipes and deliberately pushes professions back into the leveling journey. Gathering materials are useful, crafted items appear throughout progression, camps use profession contributions and endgame crafting is tied more closely to serious gear.

For a first character, a gathering profession is difficult to regret. Mining, Herbalism and Skinning turn normal travel into income and materials. If you prefer crafting, choose something that supports your class or playstyle rather than whatever guide currently claims has the highest theoretical return.

First Aid Is Important Again

Forever makes an especially strange change for returning players: Healing Potions have moved from Alchemy into First Aid in the current beta. That gives almost every character a reason to train First Aid instead of treating it as the profession you remember exists after finding forty stacks of cloth.

Cooking matters for the same old reason it always did: food buffs and recovery are useful when normal enemies are allowed to hurt you. Between First Aid, Cooking and your two primary professions, a beginner can create a surprising amount of practical value without ever becoming a dedicated crafter.

Camping connects professions to the outdoor world instead of leaving crafting entirely inside cities.

6. Be Conservative With Gold

Forever wants gold to matter. Blizzard currently has no plans for WoW Tokens or paid Character Boosts, GDKP is banned, and the game is being built around an economy where earning money remains part of progression.

That means your first gold pieces have jobs. Bags, profession training, class abilities, travel and eventually mounts all compete for the same wallet. Buy upgrades when they meaningfully improve your character, but do not treat the Auction House as a vending machine for replacing every mediocre green item.

A good beginner rule is that gold spent removing a real bottleneck is useful; gold spent because an item has slightly nicer numbers is usually just impatience wearing a price tag.

7. Group Up When Other Players Need the Same Mob

Forever keeps Classic-style contested mob tagging. The first player or group to tag an enemy gets credit. Shared Retail-style tagging is not planned because Blizzard wants that friction to encourage grouping.

So use the invitation button. If three people are waiting for the same named mob, grouping is usually faster than holding an instant spell ready and pretending the other two players are environmental hazards.

Forever’s Recent Allies system is also designed to make those temporary groups matter later by helping you recognize players you have previously adventured with. The social layer works better when you cooperate with it instead of trying to solo around it.

8. Do Not Vendor Weird Loot Too Quickly

Forever is rebuilding hundreds of Classic drops, adding new rare rewards and deliberately hiding some undiscovered item data. That means old assumptions about leveling gear are dangerous.

A perfect example is the Deadmines ring First Mate Band, an early leveling item that belongs to a set with a second ring requiring level 60. It is exactly the sort of design that makes an ordinary-looking item potentially relevant much later.

Read set bonuses, unusual effects and class interactions before selling something. Keep genuinely strange items in the bank until you understand them. Forever wants loot to become something players discover again, rather than a sequence of item levels fed into an addon.

9. Understand the Legacy System, but Do Not Obsess Over It

Legacy is Forever’s account-wide progression system. You earn Legacy Points by doing things such as leveling classes, developing professions, exploring, running dungeons, building reputation and participating in PvP. Those points are shared across the account, but each character spends them independently.

At launch, Blizzard has described 65 available Legacy Points while an individual character can spend only 16. That gap is deliberate. You are not expected to complete everything before your main is allowed to function.

Treat Legacy as a reward for playing broadly. Your first character teaches you the game. Later characters turn that experience into account progress. If you begin by treating all 65 challenges as mandatory homework, you have successfully transformed a feature designed to encourage alts into a spreadsheet with walking animations.

Forever is designed around a long-lived 1-to-60 world, with exploration, alts and professions feeding long-term progression.

10. Prepare for Level 60 Without Rushing Toward It

Forever’s level cap is 60, but its endgame structure is broader than Vanilla preservation. Blizzard plans new raids, new dungeons, a seasonal PvP reward track and raid tiers containing both 10-player and 20-player content, with special 40-player encounters still possible.

You do not need to plan your entire raid career at level 12. The useful preparation is much simpler: keep professions moving, learn your class toolkit, save useful resistance or utility pieces, build a friends list, join groups and pay attention to the economy.

Because there are no current plans for Character Boosts, the people you meet while leveling are not merely passing through disposable content. They may be the same tanks, healers, crafters and guildmates you are looking for months later.

10 Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

●     Picking PvP because it sounds more authentic when you actually hate world PvP.

●     Installing a huge addon pack before learning what Forever already provides.

●     Ignoring First Aid and Cooking because they feel like old secondary professions.

●     Grinding the same dungeon repeatedly instead of collecting its quests and returning to the world.

●     Spending most of your gold on tiny Auction House upgrades.

●     Vendoring unusual set pieces or items with strange effects without reading them.

●     Treating Legacy Points as mandatory launch-week power.

●     Refusing to group for contested quest mobs.

●     Choosing a class solely from current beta DPS rankings.

●     Rushing toward 60 so aggressively that you skip the systems Forever is specifically built around.

WoW Forever Beginner FAQ

Is WoW Forever replacing Classic Era?

No. Forever is a separate permanent version of Azeroth. Classic Era and Modern WoW continue alongside it.

What is the level cap?

WoW Forever is built around level 1 to 60 progression. The beta is staged, so not every level and zone is available at once during testing.

Do I need to buy WoW Forever separately?

The base Forever experience is included with a normal World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time. Optional paid packs contain extras such as access to the Skyborne race.

Should beginners level through dungeons?

Run them, especially when you have their quests. Do not expect repeated dungeon grinding to be the optimal leveling method, because Blizzard has deliberately reduced dungeon mob XP and increased quest rewards.

Do professions matter while leveling?

Yes. Forever adds hundreds of recipes, ties professions into Camping and outdoor progression, and gives First Aid a much larger role through Healing Potions.

Does WoW Forever have shared mob tagging?

No. Blizzard currently intends to keep Classic-style tagging and use the resulting friction to encourage players to group.

Final Advice: Let Forever Be Slow

The most useful beginner advice is also the easiest to ignore: do not optimize the entire journey out of the game.

Forever is being built around the idea that leveling, gold, professions, social friction and strange discoveries still matter. Use guides when a system is unclear. Use maps when you are genuinely lost. But leave enough room for an unexpected quest chain, a weird item, a useful stranger or a dungeon you have never seen before to interrupt the schedule.

Classic WoW became famous partly because nobody knew exactly what they were doing. Forever cannot recreate 2004 ignorance. It can, however, create new reasons to pay attention.
