Gathering professions in Classic have always been fairly honest about the transaction. Find copper, get copper. Skin a wolf, get leather. Pick Peacebloom, receive exactly the amount of Peacebloom required to make you wonder why you stopped running toward your quest objective.
WoW Forever is adding a small lottery ticket to that routine. The beta introduces a new category of rare crafting reagents labelled Scarce, and they do not appear through dedicated resource nodes. Instead, they have a chance to drop as an additional reward while you are already Mining, using Herbalism or Skinning. So far, beta players have confirmed Pyrite from Mining, Frilled Lichen from Herbalism and Pristine Leather from Skinning, according to current beta findings.
That means even an ordinary gathering stop can potentially contain something considerably more valuable than the material you originally clicked it for.
Scarce Materials Do Not Have Their Own Nodes
The important part is how the system works. You are not searching Azeroth for a special “Pyrite Vein” or a glowing Frilled Lichen plant. Scarce materials are bonus results from normal gathering activity. Mine a vein and Pyrite may come along with the usual ore. Pick an herb and Frilled Lichen can appear beside it. Skin a suitable creature and Pristine Leather can turn up alongside the normal leather.
That immediately changes the value of gathering while leveling. A low-value node is no longer necessarily just a low-value node, because it also represents another roll at a rarer crafting reagent. It is exactly the sort of system that complements the large profession overhaul already happening in WoW Forever, where Blizzard is trying to make gathering and crafting relevant throughout the journey rather than something everybody suddenly remembers at level 60.
Pyrite, Frilled Lichen and Pristine Leather Already Have Real Uses
These are not collectibles designed merely to occupy increasingly desperate bank alts. Scarce materials feed directly into Forever’s new crafting ecosystem.
Frilled Lichen is currently used by Enchanting for Enchant Weapon: Insight, which can temporarily double Spirit after casting a spell, and by Alchemy to create Cerulean Dye. That dye then feeds into numerous Tailoring recipes. Pyrite appears across several crafting professions, including Blacksmithing and unexpectedly Tailoring, while Pristine Leather is heavily used by Leatherworking but also appears in Blacksmithing and Tailoring recipes.
That cross-profession demand matters because Forever is already adding more than 600 new profession recipes. A rare material useful to several crafting professions has every chance of becoming rather valuable once a real launch economy begins forming.
There Appear to Be More Scarce Materials Waiting at Higher Levels
The three confirmed beta materials are probably only the beginning. Mining data also contains Bauxite and Pitchblende marked as Scarce, suggesting higher-level gathering will introduce additional tiers as Blizzard opens more of the 1–60 experience. Current profession databases similarly contain Pristine Hide and Pristine Scale for later Skinning progression.
We should be cautious with those higher-level materials because the full gathering progression has not yet been tested publicly. Their existence in beta data does not automatically guarantee final launch drop rates or sources.
But the design itself is clearly established.
This Could Make Old Gathering Routes Much More Valuable
Forever has already shown how seriously Blizzard is treating the profession economy. We have seen fixed-price access to rare reagents such as Black Lotus and Arcane Crystals, while Blizzard quickly changed the Tauren Cultivation racial after players demonstrated how it could be abused to reach valuable high-level herbs.
Scarce materials add the opposite incentive. Instead of concentrating everyone around a few famously valuable nodes, Blizzard is giving ordinary gathering actions a chance to produce something exceptional.
That makes the Copper Vein beside the road slightly harder to ignore.
You may only get copper.
But Forever has now given you a reason to click it anyway.
