World of Warcraft’s character creation screen is going to keep getting stranger, just not wider. Blizzard has confirmed that more race and class combinations are coming to Modern WoW, continuing the gradual dismantling of restrictions that once prevented large parts of Azeroth from discovering professions such as Paladin, Demon Hunter or apparently standing around Stormwind wearing enormous shoulder armor. At the same time, Blizzard says there will be no additional new playable race during the remainder of the Worldsoul Saga. After Earthen and Midnight’s Haranir, The Last Titan will apparently have to make do with the people Azeroth already has.

The clarification came during Blizzard’s September 17 World of Warcraft live Q&A. Asked about race and class combinations, the developers gave a very simple answer: more are coming. Blizzard pointed to Void Elf Demon Hunters as an example of why additions are sometimes staggered rather than released symmetrically, noting that opening Demon Hunter to Void Elves created a faction imbalance until further combinations could catch up.

That catch-up is already happening.

Forsaken Paladins Are the Beginning, Not the End

Patch 12.2 is adding Paladin access to Forsaken, Night Elves and Darkspear Trolls, and Blizzard now makes it clear those will not be the final restrictions removed.

We recently covered how the three new Paladin races are even getting their own racial Charger mounts, which is arguably the more interesting way to loosen class restrictions. Instead of making every race mechanically interchangeable, Blizzard can open more classes while preserving cultural flavor through quests, visuals and unique rewards.

That matters because simply allowing every race to become every class would certainly be convenient, but it could also flatten some of Warcraft’s identity. A Forsaken Paladin should ideally feel like a Forsaken discovering an extremely uncomfortable relationship with the Light, not a Human Paladin who forgot to moisturize for several decades.

Void Elf Demon Hunters Show Why Blizzard Is Moving Gradually

Midnight already pushed this philosophy forward with Void Elf Demon Hunters. As we covered in our Midnight content overview, Void Elves gained access to Demon Hunter through a dedicated questline rather than Blizzard simply flicking a switch inside character creation.

The Q&A suggests Blizzard is watching the population consequences of those decisions as well as the lore.

If one faction suddenly receives a particularly popular race and class combination without an equivalent option elsewhere, character distribution can shift. Blizzard’s answer appears to be staggered expansion rather than avoiding new combinations entirely.

So the question is no longer really whether more old restrictions disappear.

It is which one goes next.

Haranir Are the Last New Race of the Worldsoul Saga

The other half of Blizzard’s answer is much more definitive.

There will not be another new playable race during the Worldsoul Saga.

Midnight already introduced the Haranir, the nature-bound people of Harandar that can join either Horde or Alliance. We took a closer look at the Haranir when Midnight launched, including their class options and connection to Azeroth’s roots.

They now appear to be the final addition to the race roster before the saga concludes with The Last Titan.

That does not mean Blizzard is done expanding character identity. Quite the opposite. More class combinations give the developers a much cheaper and potentially more useful way to create new character possibilities without building an entirely new race, complete with models, animations, racials, customization, voices, lore and whatever strange mount Warcraft inevitably asks them to ride.

Forever’s Naming System Is Staying in Forever Too

The Q&A also closed another small door. Forever’s new first-name and last-name system will not migrate into Modern WoW during the Worldsoul Saga.

That is another sign Blizzard is increasingly comfortable letting Modern and Forever solve similar problems differently. Forever can experiment with surnames, alternate progression systems and its own social structure while Modern WoW continues evolving its existing character framework.

Some ideas may eventually cross between them.

Apparently surnames are not making that journey yet.

The Character Screen Is Still Going to Get Busier

So The Last Titan may not arrive carrying another completely new people under one arm.

But Blizzard has made sure the character creation screen is not finished changing.

Void Elf Demon Hunters are already here.

Forsaken, Night Elf and Darkspear Paladins are next.

More combinations will follow.

The playable race roster may be taking a break for the rest of the Worldsoul Saga.

The class restrictions clearly are not.
