World of Warcraft’s Midnight Season 2 PvP ladder is getting a fairly substantial push upward. Blizzard has significantly increased rating inflation across every rated PvP mode, with particular emphasis on Battleground Blitz, Rated Battlegrounds and 3v3 Arena. The reason is refreshingly uncomplicated: players are not reaching the ratings Blizzard expected them to reach at this point in the season. Rather than waiting for the ladder to eventually sort itself out, Blizzard has turned the inflation dial considerably further.
The change is already live and was announced in Blizzard’s September 17 hotfixes. In the accompanying developer note, Blizzard says feedback and current rating distribution show that “achievable PvP ratings are not meeting expectations.” The team wants the increase to improve progression as Season 2 continues and produce healthier movement through the ladder. Blizzard also says it will continue monitoring rating distribution and can make additional adjustments if necessary.
This Affects Every Rated PvP Mode
The important word here is every.
This is not just a Battleground Blitz correction or an attempt to rescue an unusually compressed 3v3 ladder. Blizzard has increased inflation across rated PvP as a whole, although it specifically singles out Battleground Blitz, Rated Battlegrounds and Rated 3v3 Arena for additional emphasis.
Rating inflation is essentially one of the tools Blizzard can use to make higher ratings increasingly attainable as a season develops. It does not simply log everyone in tomorrow with several hundred free rating points attached to their character. Instead, the rating environment becomes more permissive as players continue playing matches and moving through the ladder.
That distinction matters because Midnight Season 2 only began rated PvP in August. The early ladder naturally starts tighter, but Blizzard apparently believes Season 2 has remained tighter than intended for too long.
Blizzard Says Ratings Are Below Expectations
That is the most interesting part of the announcement.
Blizzard is not presenting this as an emergency response to one broken bracket. The developers are effectively saying the relationship between player performance and the ratings available on the ladder has not reached the place they wanted by this stage of the season.
For players chasing rating-based rewards, that matters enormously. Season 2’s Venomcoil weapon illusion is tied to Rival II, while the seasonal ladder contains additional rewards and titles further upward. If the entire population is compressed below Blizzard’s intended rating distribution, those fixed thresholds become harder than their numbers suggest.
Increasing inflation does not remove the requirement to win games.
It changes how far those wins can eventually take you.
And Yes, Players Are Already Arguing About It
The community reaction has been exactly as peaceful as one would expect from competitive PvP.
Some players welcomed the adjustment immediately, arguing that the ladder had become unnecessarily restrictive and that seasonal rating thresholds should remain realistically attainable for the audiences Blizzard designed them around. Others dislike manipulating inflation during the season and argue that ratings should reflect the ladder as it naturally develops.
That debate is not particularly new.
Every time Blizzard increases inflation, one side sees healthier progression.
The other sees rating becoming cheaper.
And somewhere in the middle is a healer who has just played six Solo Shuffle rounds and would mostly like everybody to stop typing.
Font of Venomous Rage Also Gets Cut in Half
The same hotfix includes one extremely direct balance change: Font of Venomous Rage now deals 50% less damage in PvP combat.
The nerf is PvP-specific, so its PvE performance is unaffected. That makes this less a general item tuning decision and more a recognition that the trinket was producing too much offensive value in player combat.
It also arrives immediately before another very busy tuning reset. Blizzard has already announced changes to 23 specializations on September 22, including a separate collection of PvP-specific class adjustments. Season 2’s competitive meta therefore remains anything but settled.
Season 2 Is Entering Its Real Rating Push
For players who looked at their current rating and quietly decided this was perhaps the season to take up fishing, Blizzard’s change is worth watching.
The company clearly believes the current ladder has been too restrictive.
Inflation is now significantly higher.
Three of the most important rated brackets are receiving particular attention.
And Blizzard has left the door open to further adjustments if the numbers still do not move enough.
The matchmaking system has not suddenly become charitable.
You still need to win.
It is simply becoming slightly less determined to make 1,800 feel like a mortgage application.
