The latest example is Student Fodder, one of the rewards from the returning Cozy Sleeping Bag quest chain. In Season of Discovery, eating one granted four bars of rested experience, effectively handing players 20% of a level’s worth of boosted XP. The item still exists in Forever, but that particular benefit is gone.
Instead, Student Fodder now restores health and class resources and applies Trail Snack, providing a brief 60% movement-speed boost. Trail Snack itself also heals over time. It remains useful. It just no longer lets you stuff several snacks into your bags and quietly remove chunks of the leveling journey.
And at this point, that looks increasingly deliberate.
Forever Wants Leveling Help, Not Leveling Skips
The Cozy Sleeping Bag itself still provides an XP bonus. Resting in it grants 1% additional experience per minute, stacking to 3% for an hour. Campfires can also provide rested XP, while many of Forever’s new food buffs grant another 5% experience bonus.
So Blizzard clearly is not allergic to faster leveling.
The difference is scale. These systems reward preparation, exploration and interacting with Forever’s new world mechanics. Student Fodder’s old Season of Discovery effect was much more direct: use an item, receive four bars of rested XP, continue murdering wildlife at double experience.
That distinction fits remarkably well with what we already know about Forever’s overall leveling speed. Blizzard’s beta data showed players reaching level 20 in an average of 20.5 hours, compared with 20.4 hours in Classic. Forever contains more quests, stronger classes and considerably more quality-of-life features, yet the total journey is currently moving at almost exactly the same pace.
Dungeon Grinding Has Already Been Targeted
Student Fodder is not happening in isolation. Blizzard has already heavily reduced dungeon mob experience specifically to prevent repeated instance farming from becoming the optimal leveling strategy. Dungeon quests remain valuable, but running the same dungeon fifteen times is no longer supposed to replace travelling through Azeroth.
The new Legacy System follows the same philosophy. Alts eventually receive conveniences including better rested experience, but those benefits are earned through account-wide progression rather than simply compressing the experience curve for everybody.
Blizzard keeps giving players nicer shoes.
It still expects them to walk.
The 1–60 Journey Is Part of the Game Again
This may ultimately be one of Forever’s most important differences from modern WoW. Leveling is not being treated as an obstacle standing between character creation and the real game. It is part of the real game.
That is why our complete WoW Forever guide keeps returning to the same theme. Blizzard is happy to remove inconvenience. It is much more cautious about removing time.
Student Fodder still heals you. It still restores resources. It even makes you run faster for a moment.
It just cannot eat twenty percent of a level anymore.
Apparently that was one snack too many.
