Season of Discovery players can finally freeze their XP gains, which is great news for anyone trying to stay inside a specific level bracket without accidentally leveling out of their own plans.

Because nothing says “Classic experience” quite like carefully managing your character’s growth like a suspiciously intense goblin accountant.

Blizzard added the option in the latest June 10 hotfixes, allowing players to disable or re-enable XP gains by speaking with Grendag Brightbeard in Ironforge or Orgrimmar.

There is just one small catch: the feature is currently a little too forgetful.

Where to Freeze XP in Season of Discovery

Players can now visit Grendag Brightbeard to turn XP gains off or back on again.

Alliance players will find him in Ironforge, inside the Forlorn Cavern. Horde players can find him in Orgrimmar, in the Valley of Strength.

This is useful for players who want to stay at a certain level, whether for PvP brackets, community events, challenge runs, or simply because they enjoy making Azeroth progression more complicated than strictly necessary.

The Catch: It Does Not Persist After Logout

Blizzard’s developer note confirms that there is a known issue where disabling XP gains does not persist after logging out and back in.

That means if you freeze your XP, log out, and return later, you should not blindly assume the setting is still active. Check it before doing anything that might accidentally push your character over the edge.

That is especially important in Season of Discovery, where level brackets can matter a lot. A single careless quest turn-in or dungeon run could turn your careful plan into a comedy of preventable numbers.

The 1 Gold Cost Is Temporarily Gone

Normally, this kind of XP toggle comes with a small fee. But while Blizzard investigates the logout problem, the 1 gold cost for disabling and re-enabling XP gains has been temporarily removed.

That is the right move. Charging players every time they need to reapply a setting that currently fails to persist would be a special kind of goblin behavior, and not the charming kind.

Until the bug is fixed, players can toggle XP gains without paying the usual 1g cost.

A Good Feature With a Classic Warning Label

The XP lock itself is a welcome addition. Season of Discovery has always attracted players who like controlling their route, experimenting with brackets, and squeezing strange goals out of old-world systems.

Giving those players a proper XP toggle makes sense.

But the logout bug means this is not quite a “set it and forget it” feature yet. For now, it is more like “set it, double-check it, maybe triple-check it, and do not trust your character select screen with your future.”

Still, even with the caveat, XP locking gives Season of Discovery players more control. Just remember to visit Grendag before doing anything risky.

In Classic, even stopping progress apparently requires maintenance.
