Unholy Death Knight is getting a substantial AoE tuning pass on the World of Warcraft Patch 12.1 PTR.

Epidemic damage is increasing by 75%.

Virulent Plague is going up by 50%.

Putrefy’s area damage is receiving a 35% buff, while Graveyard gains another 15%.

Those are not the numbers of a spec receiving a polite midweek adjustment.

Blizzard is clearly trying to make Unholy’s disease-based damage matter again before Midnight Season 2 begins.

Epidemic Is Getting the Largest Direct Buff

Epidemic damage is being increased by 75%.

For Unholy Death Knights, Epidemic is the main Runic Power spender used when fighting multiple enemies affected by Virulent Plague.

It deals Shadow damage to the targeted enemy and additional damage to nearby infected targets, making it one of the most recognisable parts of Unholy’s dungeon rotation.

A 75% increase should give the ability considerably more weight in larger pulls.

That matters because spending Runic Power on Epidemic needs to feel meaningfully different from continuing to press single-target abilities while hoping the passive disease damage handles everything else.

The buff does not affect Graveyard, despite Graveyard being linked to Epidemic through Unholy’s Apex Talent system.

Blizzard has instead tuned Graveyard separately with a smaller 15% increase.

Virulent Plague Is Getting 50% More Damage

Virulent Plague damage is increasing by 50%.

That is arguably the more important change for Unholy’s overall identity.

The spec has always sold the fantasy of spreading disease through enemy packs, watching infections erupt and turning crowded pulls into a biological disaster with plate armour.

When Virulent Plague contributes too little damage, that fantasy becomes mostly decorative.

A 50% increase should make maintaining and spreading the disease more rewarding, especially during sustained AoE encounters where enemies live long enough for the damage-over-time effect to matter.

It may be less noticeable in short pulls where enemies die before the disease can produce much value.

That is the usual problem with damage-over-time builds: the dungeon group must leave something alive long enough for the plague to finish its paperwork.

Putrefy’s Area Damage Is Also Being Lifted

Putrefy’s area-of-effect damage is increasing by 35%.

Putrefy is tied to Unholy’s disease-focused gameplay and helps turn plague management into direct damage against groups of enemies.

The change strengthens another part of the kit that should reward players for properly maintaining infections rather than relying entirely on summoned minions and cooldown stacking.

Combined with stronger Virulent Plague and Epidemic damage, the update shifts more power toward abilities the Death Knight actively uses during regular AoE combat.

That is healthier than allowing the spec’s performance to be dominated by a collection of temporary creatures doing most of the work somewhere behind the tank.

Unholy should command an undead army.

It should not feel like the player is merely managing payroll.

Graveyard Gets a Smaller 15% Buff

Graveyard damage is increasing by 15% through the Forbidden Knowledge Apex Talent.

Compared with the other numbers, 15% almost looks restrained.

However, Graveyard already sits inside a broader package of Epidemic-based damage, and Blizzard specifically notes that the 75% Epidemic buff does not also increase Graveyard.

Keeping the two effects separate gives Blizzard more control over how much power comes from the base ability and how much comes from the Apex Talent.

It also prevents the Graveyard component from accidentally receiving an enormous double increase through both changes.

For once, the absence of another 75% multiplier may be the responsible part of the patch note.

This Looks Like an Attempt to Restore Unholy’s Disease Identity

The most interesting part of the tuning is where Blizzard chose to add damage.

These buffs are focused on Epidemic, Virulent Plague, Putrefy and Graveyard.

They are not simply increasing every Unholy ability by the same percentage.

That suggests Blizzard wants the spec’s diseases and AoE spenders to occupy a larger share of its damage profile.

Unholy has often struggled to balance three competing identities: disease damage, Festering Wound management and undead summons.

When one of those systems becomes too dominant, the others can feel like buttons pressed only because the talent calculator says they are required.

Strengthening disease-based AoE may help Unholy feel more cohesive in Mythic+, where spreading infections and detonating damage across large enemy packs should be one of the spec’s natural strengths.

Huge Buffs Do Not Guarantee a Meta Spot

The numbers are impressive, but they do not automatically make Unholy Death Knight a top Season 2 Mythic+ specialisation.

Dungeon performance depends on more than raw AoE damage.

Priority-target damage, ramp-up time, defensive strength, utility, mobility and how quickly each pull dies will all affect the final result.

Disease damage can look excellent during long, controlled pulls and considerably less useful when a highly geared group deletes everything before Virulent Plague gets comfortable.

Unholy also needs to switch priority targets cleanly without losing too much of its setup.

Blizzard has separately adjusted Dread Plague so its extended duration can carry to a new nearby target, specifically addressing difficulties with target swapping.

That mechanical improvement may prove just as important as the new damage numbers.

Blizzard Is Not Finished Tuning Unholy

The changes remain on the Curse of Ula’tek PTR and can still be adjusted before Patch 12.1 reaches live servers.

Blizzard has already made several passes over Death Knight talents and damage profiles during testing.

We have also covered the wider Death Knight Patch 12.1 tuning changes and the ridiculous 1,400% Blood Beast buff.

Unholy’s latest update is less meme-worthy than multiplying a summoned creature’s damage by fifteen, but it may have a much larger effect on normal gameplay.

Epidemic should hit harder. Diseases should matter more. AoE pulls should feel more like controlled plague outbreaks and less like waiting for cooldowns to do something interesting.

For a spec built around death, disease and raising corpses, that seems like a fairly reasonable place to start.
