World of Warcraft players have spent Midnight Season 1 upgrading equipment, collecting Voidcores and squeezing additional item levels out of their best weapons and trinkets.

Blizzard has now decided the next season needs to feel more rewarding.

The solution is simple.

Make the current rewards feel older considerably faster.

Midnight Season 2 gear will arrive 46 item levels above the equivalent rewards from Season 1. Blizzard originally planned the usual 39-item-level increase but added another seven levels after deciding the first version did not provide meaningful enough upgrades.

Season 2’s strongest gear will now reach item level 344.

Your current equipment is not being deleted.

It is merely preparing to become sentimental.

Blizzard Increased the Gap From 39 to 46 Item Levels

Blizzard announced the additional increase during Patch 12.1 PTR testing.

The developer explained that Season 1 characters had become more powerful than originally expected through gear upgrades, Voidcores and rewards introduced in Patch 12.0.7.

As a result, the planned 39-item-level increase was apparently not enough to make Season 2 rewards feel sufficiently valuable.

Blizzard therefore moved the entire Season 2 reward structure upward by another seven item levels.

The final difference between equivalent Season 1 and Season 2 rewards is now 46 item levels.

That is a substantial seasonal reset, especially after players have spent months upgrading gear that was already supposed to represent the upper end of Midnight progression.

Season 2 Gear Will Reach Item Level 344

The new maximum comes from gear at the equivalent of Myth 9/6.

That pushes the strongest Season 2 items to item level 344.

Very Rare items from Mythic difficulty can reach this level, alongside drops and Great Vault rewards from the final two bosses of the Venomous Abyss.

Mythic raid Vault rewards will otherwise arrive at Myth 6/6, while Heroic raid Vault choices can begin directly on the Myth track.

Blizzard is therefore not only increasing the overall numbers.

Patch 12.1 is also creating more opportunities for high-end raid rewards to arrive above their normal upgrade-track limits.

The raid may contain eight bosses.

The item-level system has apparently brought several hidden ones of its own.

Your Season 1 Gear Will Still Be Useful at First

A 46-item-level increase does not mean every Season 1 item becomes worthless when the patch launches.

Strong Myth-track equipment, upgraded weapons, rare trinkets and powerful cantrip items should remain useful during the opening stages of Season 2.

Players will not immediately replace an optimized high-end item with the first green belt dropped by an irritated snake.

That is particularly true for gear with unusually strong effects.

A lower-level trinket or weapon can remain competitive when its special ability is valuable enough, and Blizzard has designed the seasonal transition around players gradually moving into the new reward tracks.

The problem is how quickly that transition may happen.

With the additional seven-item-level increase, relatively accessible Season 2 equipment will move much closer to the best rewards earned during Season 1.

The months spent building a carefully optimized set will still provide an early advantage.

It simply may not survive for as many weeks as players expected.

Why Blizzard Wants a Larger Reset

Blizzard’s reasoning is understandable.

A new season needs new rewards.

If players enter Season 2 wearing equipment that remains superior to most early raid, dungeon, Delve and outdoor drops, a large part of the new progression system becomes irrelevant.

Receiving loot is considerably less exciting when every item is immediately converted into vendor gold because Season 1 already solved the slot.

The larger increase ensures that almost everyone has upgrades to chase again.

It also helps newer and returning players close the gap by earning current-season gear rather than spending months catching up through obsolete content.

That is the positive side of a strong seasonal reset.

The negative side is that WoW increasingly treats equipment as temporary access to the next equipment grind.

Players Are Worried the Reset Has Gone Too Far

The announcement immediately produced criticism from players on Blizzard’s PTR forum.

Several argued that previous-season Myth gear should remain comparable to Champion-track equipment from the following season.

Others were concerned that basic Season 2 rewards would sit too close to equipment earned from the hardest Season 1 content.

The frustration is not simply about losing character power.

Seasonal WoW is built around replacing gear, and most players understand that progression needs somewhere to go.

The concern is whether the reset respects the time spent obtaining the previous season’s best rewards.

When an expansion resets gear every few months, completing a difficult raid or maximizing a Myth-track item can begin to feel less like earning legendary equipment and more like renting it until the next maintenance period.

The Stat Squish Is Already Starting to Look Temporary

Midnight launched with an item-level and stat squish intended to reduce the enormous numbers accumulated across previous expansions.

The Season 2 increase demonstrates how quickly those numbers can begin climbing again.

One 46-item-level jump does not immediately undo the squish.

It does suggest that WoW’s seasonal progression continues to produce the same inflation that made the squish necessary in the first place.

If later Midnight seasons follow a similar pattern, character health, damage and item levels will begin expanding rapidly again.

WoW has become remarkably good at reducing numbers.

It remains equally talented at rebuilding them.

Season 2 Will Still Reward Every Type of Player

The new item levels will apply across raid, Mythic+, Delves, Prey and other seasonal activities.

Players will continue progressing through familiar Veteran, Champion, Hero and Myth upgrade tracks.

The Great Vault is also becoming more generous for raiders.

LFR, Normal and Heroic raid completions can provide rewards on higher tracks than the bosses normally drop, while Mythic raid Vault rewards reach Myth 6/6.

Later in the season, Ascendant Venomstones will allow fully upgraded weapons, trinkets and necklaces to reach the equivalent of Myth 8.

There will be no shortage of methods for increasing item level.

The larger question is how long each increase will feel important.

Your Gear Is Powerful Until the Calendar Says Otherwise

Blizzard wants Season 2 loot to feel meaningful.

Increasing the reward gap to 46 item levels will certainly accomplish that.

New drops will matter. Vault choices will matter. Players will once again inspect dungeon loot instead of automatically dismantling it.

The price is a harsher reset for everyone who spent Season 1 building an exceptional character.

The best gear currently available will provide a useful head start.

It will not provide immunity from the seasonal treadmill.

Your weapon may have survived Mythic raids, high keys and several months of upgrades.

It has finally encountered something stronger:
