Blizzard is already talking about what comes after Patch 12.2.
In a new developer interview, Senior Game Director Ion Hazzikostas and Associate Game Director Paul Kubit have given players a surprisingly clear idea of how far ahead Blizzard plans to look at BlizzCon 2026.
Patch 12.1.5 should already be available on the PTR before the convention begins.
Then BlizzCon itself will look ahead to Patch 12.1.7, Patch 12.2 and potentially even beyond 12.2.
For an expansion currently occupied with poisonous snakes and people arguing over Bonus Rolls, Midnight apparently has quite a lot left in the tank.
Patch 12.1.5 Will Be on the PTR Before BlizzCon
The most immediate confirmation concerns Patch 12.1.5.
During Psybear's interview with Ion Hazzikostas and Paul Kubit, Blizzard said players should already have been able to see some of Patch 12.1.5 on the PTR by the time BlizzCon begins.
That matters because BlizzCon is only a little over two weeks away.
Blizzard has previously outlined several major pieces of 12.1.5.
The headline feature is Labyrinths, a new form of large-scale Delve content inspired by mega-dungeons.
Instead of the relatively short Delves players are used to, Labyrinths are designed as larger sprawling environments that can be tackled in one longer session or gradually over time.
Patch 12.1.5 is also scheduled to include a new one-boss raid encounter that continues Midnight's main narrative and helps bridge the story toward the next major update.
We previously looked at the clues surrounding when Patch 12.1.5 may actually arrive.
A PTR appearing before BlizzCon should give us considerably more useful evidence than another mysterious countdown.
BlizzCon Will Look Beyond 12.1.5
The more interesting part is what Blizzard intends to discuss at the convention itself.
Paul Kubit indicated that Patch 12.1.5 will effectively be old news by then.
Instead, the developers want to look further ahead.
That includes:
- Patch 12.1.7
- Patch 12.2
- Content beyond Patch 12.2
Blizzard has not revealed exactly what those announcements will contain.
That distinction matters.
We know the patches will be discussed.
We do not yet know their complete features, locations, raids or story developments.
Anyone currently promising that Patch 12.2 contains seventeen new zones, player-owned zeppelins and playable murloc paladins is getting slightly ahead of the presentation.
Patch 12.1.7 Is Already on Blizzard’s Roadmap
Patch 12.1.7 is not completely unexpected.
Blizzard's earlier State of Azeroth roadmap already showed Midnight continuing through a 12.1.7 update.
What is notable is that BlizzCon apparently will not stop there.
Patch 12.2 represents the next major content cycle after the current Curse of Ula'tek storyline.
And Blizzard is now openly saying it expects to discuss what happens after that as well.
That gives BlizzCon a potentially much larger role than simply showing the next patch trailer.
It may effectively become the point where Blizzard lays out the next substantial chunk of modern WoW's future.
This Fits Blizzard’s Faster Patch Strategy
Hazzikostas and Kubit also explained why Blizzard can talk this far ahead.
The development team is working on multiple patches simultaneously.
That allows one update to move toward release while later teams are already developing the content that follows it.
Blizzard specifically contrasted the current approach with the early Shadowlands period, when players waited roughly seven months between the expansion launch and Patch 9.1.
That kind of content drought is something the modern WoW team clearly does not want to repeat.
The result has been a much more aggressive cadence where smaller updates, major patches and seasonal content increasingly overlap in development.
It also explains why we can currently be covering live tuning inside The Venomous Abyss while Blizzard is simultaneously preparing the PTR for the patch after this one.
World of Warcraft development has become a conveyor belt.
Fortunately, the conveyor belt currently contains Labyrinths rather than anima.
Midnight Still Has a Lot of Ground Left to Cover
It is easy to forget how early we still are in Midnight's larger story.
Patch 12.1 has only just moved players through the Curse of Ula'tek storyline, the Coiled Isle and The Venomous Abyss.
Story Mode has only just opened, allowing players to finish the current Venomous Abyss campaign without joining a full raid group.
Season 2 gearing is still being adjusted.
The Race to World First is still active.
Mythic+ routes are still changing.
And Blizzard is already preparing to show us what happens several updates later.
That gives Midnight a rather different feeling from expansions where players occasionally spent months wondering whether another patch was coming at all.
BlizzCon 2026 Is September 12–13
We will not have to wait long for the answers.
BlizzCon 2026 takes place September 12 and 13 at the Anaheim Convention Center.
Blizzard has already promised an Opening Ceremony, developer panels, hands-on gameplay and the usual convention events.
For modern World of Warcraft players, however, the roadmap may be the most important part.
Ion Hazzikostas described it as an exciting BlizzCon for Warcraft fans and said more will be revealed soon.
Given what Blizzard is now willing to tease in advance, that does not appear to mean one cinematic and a release date.
12.1.5 Is Just the Beginning
The useful thing about Blizzard's latest comments is that they establish a clear sequence.
Before BlizzCon: Patch 12.1.5 reaches the PTR.
At BlizzCon: Blizzard talks about Patch 12.1.7.
Then Patch 12.2.
Then possibly what comes after Patch 12.2.
We still do not know what all of that content actually is.
But we now know how far ahead Blizzard intends to pull back the curtain.
Midnight Season 2 may currently be asking us to kill Ula'tek.
Blizzard's developers are already several patches further down the road.
In two weeks, we should finally get to see where that road goes.
