Zul’Aman’s next disaster is not beginning with an invading army.
It is beginning with a younger brother who is tired of watching his people disappear.
Blizzard has released Legacy of Rage, a new World of Warcraft: Midnight comic exploring Zul’jan, the grandson of legendary Amani warlord Zul’jin and brother of current chieftain Zul’jarra.
The comic follows Zul’jan as childhood memories, old family wounds and the promise of ancient power pull him toward a path that threatens both his sister’s leadership and the future of the Amani.
Zul’jan wants to restore his people.
The ancient force offering to help has considerably less charitable plans.
Zul’jan Grew Up Beneath Zul’jin’s Shadow
Zul’jan belongs to a family defined by the fall of the Amani empire.
His grandfather, Zul’jin, spent his life fighting the high elves of Quel’Thalas and attempting to reclaim lands the forest trolls considered stolen.
Zul’jin eventually died inside Zul’Aman after turning against the Horde and attempting to seize the powers of the loa.
That defeat left the Amani divided, weakened and increasingly isolated.
For Zul’jan, Zul’jin is therefore more than an infamous historical figure.
He is proof that the Amani once possessed the strength to terrify kingdoms.
He is also proof that rage can destroy the people it claims to protect.
Legacy of Rage places Zul’jan directly between those two interpretations.
Zul’jarra Chose Survival Over Revenge
Zul’jan’s sister, Zul’jarra, has taken a more cautious approach to Amani leadership.
She inherited a fractured collection of tribes, a damaged relationship with the loa and generations of hatred toward the elves living beside Zul’Aman.
Her responsibility is not simply avenging the past.
She must keep enough Amani alive to have a future.
Zul’jan sees that restraint differently.
To him, compromise risks becoming surrender.
Every lost territory, broken tradition and weakened tribe becomes another reminder that the Amani are slowly accepting their own decline.
The siblings therefore want the same thing: a strong and independent Amani people.
They disagree on whether that future can be built without reopening every wound their grandfather left behind.
A Mysterious Mentor Is Feeding Zul’jan’s Anger
The comic introduces a mysterious mentor guiding Zul’jan through the history of his family and people.
This figure encourages him to examine Zul’jin’s legacy, the failures of the loa and the possibility of reclaiming power the Amani once feared or rejected.
That guidance is not presented as neutral history.
Zul’jan is being pushed toward a conclusion.
The Amani are weak because their leaders accepted weakness.
The loa failed them.
His sister’s caution will not rebuild the empire.
Ancient power, however dangerous, might.
It is an extremely convenient lesson for whoever benefits from Zul’jan opening the wrong door.
Ula’tek Offers the Power Zul’jan Thinks He Needs
Patch 12.1: Curse of Ula’tek continues this story on the Coiled Isle and inside the Venomous Abyss.
Ula’tek is an ancient power associated with hatred, corruption and venom.
Blizzard’s Season 2 material states that Zul’jan’s actions awaken her, allowing the creature and her brood to threaten Azeroth once again.
That does not necessarily mean Zul’jan understands the full consequences.
From his perspective, forbidden power may look like the only remaining tool capable of protecting the Amani and restoring what his grandfather lost.
From Ula’tek’s perspective, an angry young leader carrying generations of resentment looks like an unlocked front door.
Zul’jan Is Not Being Written as a Simple Villain
The strongest part of Legacy of Rage is that Zul’jan’s anger is understandable.
The Amani have lost territory, political influence and spiritual certainty.
Their war with Quel’Thalas did not end with reconciliation. It ended with the elves surviving and the trolls becoming an increasingly fragmented power inside their own ancestral lands.
Zul’jan is wrong to believe ancient corruption offers a clean solution.
He is not wrong that the Amani have reasons to feel abandoned.
That distinction gives the character more weight than another troll leader shouting about revenge before becoming a dungeon boss.
He is being manipulated through a real grievance.
The trap works because the pain underneath it is genuine.
The Comic Builds on Legacy of the Amani
Legacy of Rage works as a companion to Blizzard’s earlier Midnight short story, Legacy of the Amani.
That story focused on Zul’jarra and the burden of proving herself as chieftain while holding the divided tribes together.
Her grandfather’s failure left the Amani fractured and without the loa they once depended upon.
The new comic shows the same crisis from Zul’jan’s perspective.
Zul’jarra sees leadership as the difficult work of preserving what remains.
Zul’jan sees preservation without restoration as a slower form of defeat.
Neither sibling is arguing over a throne for its own sake.
They are arguing over what survival should look like.
Much of This Story Should Probably Be in the Game
The comic is free and available both as a downloadable story and a narrated presentation.
It still raises a familiar Warcraft storytelling problem.
Zul’jan’s motivations are directly relevant to Patch 12.1’s central threat.
Players entering the Coiled Isle without reading Legacy of Rage may encounter his decisions without fully understanding the childhood memories, family pressure and manipulation behind them.
Supplementary fiction can deepen a character.
It becomes more questionable when it contains the emotional bridge required to understand why that character has just awakened the expansion’s next raid boss.
World of Warcraft has once again placed an important piece of World of Warcraft outside World of Warcraft.
The Amani Conflict Is About More Than Horde Versus Alliance
The original Zul’Aman stories were largely framed around the Amani war against Quel’Thalas and Zul’jin’s rejection of the Horde.
Midnight is shifting the conflict inward.
The central question is no longer simply whether the trolls can defeat the elves.
It is whether the Amani can rebuild without repeating the decisions that destroyed them.
Zul’jarra represents survival, cooperation and a painful break from parts of Zul’jin’s legacy.
Zul’jan represents pride, restoration and the belief that abandoning old rage means abandoning Amani identity.
Ula’tek does not need to invent that conflict.
She only needs to make one side believe corruption is the same thing as strength.
Legacy of Rage Makes Zul’jan More Dangerous
Before the comic, Zul’jan could easily be understood as another reckless character searching for forbidden power.
After Legacy of Rage, his path becomes more tragic.
He is trying to honour his grandfather, protect his people and escape the shadow of a sister whose leadership he believes cannot reverse their decline.
The mysterious mentor gives those fears direction.
Ula’tek gives them a weapon.
The result is the family conflict sitting beneath Patch 12.1’s entire raid story.
Zul’jan wants the Amani to rise again.
The question is whether anything recognisably Amani will remain if the power helping them rise is allowed to choose the destination.
