There are flying serpents, armoured boars, poisonous dragons, mechanical Delve golems and at least one creature whose primary design instruction appears to have been “add more heads.”
The collection is spread across almost every major Season 2 activity, including Mythic+, raids, Delves, PvP, Prey, reputation and the new Coiled Isle.
Not every mount will require a mythic raid team or several months of competitive suffering.
Some come from ordinary exploration, Renown progression and repeatable rare farming.
Others exist mainly to remind collectors that sleep remains optional.
The Five Patch 12.1 Mounts That Matter Most
All 23 mounts will have an audience, but five stand out because of their models, prestige or realistic accessibility.
1. The Writhing Brood
The Writhing Brood drops from Zul’jan in Altar of Fangs on Mythic or Mythic+ difficulty.
It uses the new Writhe model: a large three-headed serpent that looks as though one ordinary snake was promoted beyond its management abilities.
The mount should become one of Patch 12.1’s most frequently farmed dungeon rewards.
Unlike a seasonal rating mount, it is tied to a repeatable dungeon boss. That means collectors can continue pursuing it after the first weeks of Season 2, although the eventual drop rate will determine whether this becomes a pleasant side project or another long-term disagreement with probability.
2. Primeval Skyfriend
Primeval Skyfriend drops from Ula’tek on Mythic difficulty inside the Venomous Abyss raid.
It is the patch’s prestige raid mount and will initially drop three copies whenever Mythic Ula’tek is defeated.
The name may contain the word “friend,” but obtaining one requires defeating the most dangerous boss in the raid at its highest difficulty.
This will be one of Season 2’s rarest mounts during early progression and an obvious status symbol for guilds clearing Mythic Ula’tek.
3. Breath of Blight
Breath of Blight is awarded for Midnight Keystone Master: Season 2.
For many active players, this will be the most realistic major mount goal of the season.
It requires a strong Mythic+ rating, but not the extreme commitment associated with title cutoffs or Gladiator rewards.
Seasonal Keystone Master mounts also have a firm deadline. Once Season 2 ends, the achievement and its reward disappear.
That makes Breath of Blight worth prioritising before collectors become distracted by the next patch and discover that eight unfinished dungeon scores do not complete themselves.
4. Indigo Coiled Horror
The Indigo Coiled Horror becomes available at Renown 17 with Zul’jarra’s Forces.
It is another striking three-headed serpent, but unlike The Writhing Brood, it does not depend on a random dungeon drop.
Players who regularly complete Coiled Isle activities should eventually unlock it through normal patch progression.
That combination of a dramatic model and predictable acquisition route makes it one of the best mounts for players who prefer filling progress bars to repeatedly asking one boss for permission.
5. Sea-Dwelling Isle Serpent
The Sea-Dwelling Isle Serpent comes from Captain Tokka’s fishing-focused reputation and its Coiled Filament grind.
This will not be the quickest mount in the patch.
It may, however, become one of the most memorable because it is tied to Cursed Fishing rather than ordinary combat progression.
Players who enjoy fishing reputations gain a long-term objective. Everyone else gains another opportunity to insist that fishing is relaxing while staring intensely at a progress counter.
Three New Delve Mounts
Delves receive three mechanical mounts during Midnight Season 2:
- Apophic Soul Crusher – awarded by Let Me Solo Him: Azta’rec after defeating the Season 2 Nemesis boss on Tier ?? difficulty.
- Corroded Soul Crusher – unlocked at Rank 5 of the Season 2 Delver’s Journey.
- Delver’s Arcane Golem – found inside a Sturdy Treasure in the Gnarldor Isle Delve.
Corroded Soul Crusher should be the most accessible of the three because it comes from seasonal progression.
Apophic Soul Crusher is the prestige version, tied to the hardest Nemesis encounter.
Delver’s Arcane Golem sits somewhere between them, depending on how generous its treasure drop proves to be.
Two New Prey Mounts
The Season 2 Prey system adds two green Manawyrm variants:
- Preyhunter’s Fury – awarded at Rank 10 of the Season 2 Preyseeker’s Journey.
- Hexflame Reaver – a random drop from Ral’kala, a new Coiled Isle Nemesis.
Preyhunter’s Fury is the dependable option.
Hexflame Reaver asks players to place their trust in a random drop, which has traditionally been Warcraft’s preferred method of transforming optimism into resentment.
Three Dungeon and Mythic+ Mounts
- Breath of Blight – Midnight Keystone Master: Season 2.
- Breath of Ruin – Midnight Keystone Legend: Season 2.
- The Writhing Brood – drops from Zul’jan in Mythic or Mythic+ Altar of Fangs.
Breath of Ruin sits above the Keystone Master reward and requires the higher Keystone Legend rating threshold.
It will therefore be less common than Breath of Blight without reaching the almost microscopic population associated with top-percentile titles.
The Writhing Brood has no seasonal rating requirement, but it may demand many more individual dungeon runs.
One mount tests performance.
The other tests whether the player can remain polite after the fiftieth unsuccessful kill.
Two Venomous Abyss Raid Mounts
- Primeval Skyfriend – drops from Mythic Ula’tek.
- Crimson Venomfang – awarded by Glory of the Venomous Raider.
Crimson Venomfang will be the more attainable raid reward because Glory achievements can often be completed by organised groups after progression pressure has eased.
Primeval Skyfriend requires a full Mythic clear and will remain the greater prestige item.
Both give raiders a reason to return after the ordinary loot has begun losing its emotional power.
Three Season 2 PvP Mounts
- Vicious Lightbloom Boar – Alliance Season 2 Vicious reward.
- Vicious Lightbloom Boar – Horde Season 2 Vicious reward.
- Venomous Gladiator’s Goredrake – awarded for winning 50 rated 3v3 matches while at Elite rank.
The two faction boars share a name but use faction-specific presentations.
The Goredrake is the clear prestige reward and will remain beyond the reach of most players.
That is not criticism.
Some mounts exist to be collected.
Others exist to fly past the Auction House and make everyone briefly inspect the rider.
Three Mounts From the Coiled Isle
- Ruby Writhe – drops from rare enemies on the Coiled Isle.
- Topaz Skyfang – drops from rare enemies on the Coiled Isle.
- Auriferous Venomfang – awarded by Treasures of the Coiled Isle.
These should be among the best targets for casual collectors.
The two rare drops can be farmed daily, while Auriferous Venomfang rewards players for exploring the zone and finding its treasures.
None requires rated PvP, Mythic raiding or a fixed Mythic+ score.
They merely require regular visits and a willingness to compete with everyone else who has read the same rare-spawn guide.
Three Mounts From the Vaults of Atal’Utek
- Caustic Venomfang – purchased from the Skull of Er’inye using Corrosive Coins.
- Emerald Skyfang – awarded by Pro Poison Patroller.
- Venomous Coiler – awarded by Assault the Vault.
These mounts provide clear long-term objectives inside the Vaults of Atal’Utek.
Caustic Venomfang is particularly predictable because it comes from a vendor.
The only mystery is how much currency and repeated public-event participation Blizzard considers a reasonable amount of character development.
Four Renown and Reputation Mounts
- Spirit of Tok’jara – unlocked through a multi-day questline after reaching Renown 10 with Zul’jarra’s Forces.
- Indigo Coiled Horror – available at Renown 17 with Zul’jarra’s Forces.
- Violet-Backed Skyfang – available at Renown 19 with Zul’jarra’s Forces.
- Sea-Dwelling Isle Serpent – earned through Captain Tokka’s reputation and the Coiled Filament grind.
These are the mounts most players will gradually earn simply by remaining active throughout Patch 12.1.
Spirit of Tok’jara arrives relatively early, while the Indigo Coiled Horror and Violet-Backed Skyfang reward deeper Renown progression.
The Sea-Dwelling Isle Serpent follows its own fishing-focused route because apparently ordinary Renown was insufficiently damp.
Which Mounts Should You Chase First?
The best priority depends on how each player approaches the game.
Mythic+ players should begin working toward Breath of Blight immediately because seasonal rating rewards have a deadline.
Raiders should organise Glory of the Venomous Raider while their teams remain active.
Solo players should focus on Renown, the Delver’s Journey, Coiled Isle treasures and Vault achievements.
Collectors should kill the relevant rare enemies whenever they are available and begin Captain Tokka’s reputation early.
The easiest mistake is delaying a slow reputation or seasonal objective because it appears permanent.
Three months later, the mount journal will explain that the player needs another seventeen days of fishing and several emotional adjustments.
Patch 12.1 Has a Mount for Almost Everyone
Patch 12.1’s 23 mounts are distributed unusually well across WoW’s major activities.
Competitive players receive Keystone, Gladiator and Mythic raid rewards.
Solo players can progress through Delves, Prey, exploration and Renown.
Collectors have rare drops and vendor grinds.
Fishing players receive an aquatic serpent and the quiet satisfaction of having chosen the strangest available progression path.
The Writhing Brood, Primeval Skyfriend, Breath of Blight, Indigo Coiled Horror and Sea-Dwelling Isle Serpent are the five mounts most likely to define the patch.
They cover prestige, accessibility and several of Patch 12.1’s strongest new models.
The remaining eighteen are not filler.
They are simply additional evidence that Blizzard understands the central principle of World of Warcraft.
The world may be threatened by an ancient venomous horror.
Players would still like to know whether it drops a mount.
