Patch 12.1 has been live for approximately five minutes, so naturally World of Warcraft's secret hunters have already started dismantling the furniture looking for things Blizzard forgot to put in the patch notes.
They found one.
The WoW Secret Finding & Collections community has discovered
Slitherfang, a hidden snake pet tucked inside the new Altar of Fangs dungeon.
And unlike simply killing a boss and hoping something falls out, getting this one requires five players, several hidden items and a small ritual involving a very unfortunate serpent.
Azeroth has traditions.
You Need Five Players in Mythic Altar of Fangs
Slitherfang can be obtained inside the
Mythic version of Altar of Fangs.
You need a full group of five because every player has a specific role in the ritual.
After defeating the first boss, Rav'i, search around the poison waterfalls in the boss arena.
There are hidden interactable objects there.
One player needs to pick up a
Ritual Reagent.
The other four players each need a
Reversal Charm.
Make sure everyone has the correct item before moving on.
This is not the ideal moment for someone to say, “I thought Steve picked it up.”
After the Second Boss, Do Not Touch the Totems
Continue through the dungeon and defeat the second boss.
Eventually, you will encounter an
Ascendent Serpent surrounded by four poisonous totems.
Clear the nearby enemies.
Then stop.
Do
not interact with the four totems normally.
Instead, each of the four players carrying a Reversal Charm needs to stand next to one of the totems.
The player carrying the Ritual Reagent moves to the Ascendent Serpent itself.
Once everyone is correctly positioned, all five players should receive a special action button.
Now comes the important order.
The player with the
Ritual Reagent uses their ability first.
Then the four players carrying
Reversal Charms use theirs.
Do it correctly and the Ascendent Serpent transforms into a giant version of Slitherfang.
All five players can then interact with it and receive the pet.
You Can Do This Even If You Already Cleared Mythic 0
There is some good news for anyone who already ran Altar of Fangs this week.
You haven't missed your chance.
Players who have already completed their Mythic 0 lockout can return to the dungeon and perform the Slitherfang ritual.
You won't receive boss loot again, obviously, but the secret itself still works.
There is one restriction worth knowing: once the cleansed Slitherfang appears, it disappears after
five players have claimed it.
So you cannot complete the ritual once and then rotate another fifteen guild members through the finished instance.
Five people perform the ritual.
Five people get the snake.
Blizzard has apparently anticipated our schemes.
Altar of Fangs Is Becoming Quite the Collector Dungeon
This gives collectors another reason to spend time inside Patch 12.1's newest dungeon.
We first looked at Altar of Fangs before launch as the brand-new dungeon joining Midnight Season 2's Mythic+ rotation.
Since then, it has become increasingly clear that Blizzard stuffed quite a lot into the place.
The dungeon also contains
The Writhing Brood, one of Patch 12.1's new mounts, which shares a similar visual style with Slitherfang.

So if you enjoy snakes, Altar of Fangs is rapidly becoming Azeroth's least subtle shopping centre.
This Is Exactly Why WoW Secrets Still Work
The actual reward is small.
It doesn't increase your item level.
It doesn't improve your Great Vault.
It doesn't give you another currency to track.
It is simply a hidden pet requiring five people to notice unusual objects, experiment with them and work out the correct sequence.
And that is precisely why these secrets are fun.
Patch notes can explain systems.
Datamining can reveal models.
Guides can solve encounters before most players ever enter them.
But occasionally Blizzard still manages to hide something inside the world and let the community figure it out.
The Secret Finding community did exactly that with Slitherfang.
Patch 12.1 has been live for three days.
One secret is already solved.
Which probably means somewhere on the Coiled Isle, twenty people are currently staring suspiciously at a rock.
