The Venomous Abyss opens in two days.

Naturally, Blizzard is still rearranging the loot tables.

A new Patch 12.1 hotfix changes which characters can roll Need on two important items from the upcoming Season 2 raid. All tank specializations can now roll Need on Zul'jin's Guillotine Technique, while Survival Hunters can now roll Need on Agility two-handed axes and swords. ([worldofwarcraft.blizzard.com](https://worldofwarcraft.blizzard.com/news/24296142/hotfixes-august-14-2026))

That second change puts Maze-roa, Warlord's Fury firmly onto the Survival Hunter loot table.

These sound like small technical adjustments.

They are not, especially once Season 2 Bonus Rolls enter the picture.

Every Tank Can Now Roll Need on Zul'jin's Guillotine Technique

Zul'jin's Guillotine Technique is a damage-oriented trinket from the penultimate boss of The Venomous Abyss.

Before the hotfix, it was not included in every tank specialization's normal loot options. Blizzard has now changed that so the following specs can roll Need:

  • Blood Death Knight
  • Vengeance Demon Hunter
  • Guardian Druid
  • Brewmaster Monk
  • Protection Paladin
  • Protection Warrior

Blizzard confirms the Need-roll change directly in the August 14 hotfix notes. Wowhead's updated raid-loot analysis also confirms that the trinket has been added to the Bonus Roll loot table for every tank specialization. ([worldofwarcraft.blizzard.com](https://worldofwarcraft.blizzard.com/news/24296142/hotfixes-august-14-2026)) ([wowhead.com](https://www.wowhead.com/news/bonus-roll-loot-table-changes-in-the-venomous-abyss-raid-382461))

That is particularly interesting for Protection Warrior and Protection Paladin, where early analysis suggests the trinket may be a strong offensive option. ([wowhead.com](https://www.wowhead.com/news/bonus-roll-loot-table-changes-in-the-venomous-abyss-raid-382461))

Tanks have spent years explaining that damage is mitigation if the boss dies before it attacks again.

Blizzard has apparently agreed to hear the argument.

Survival Hunters Can Finally Need Agility Two-Handers

The other change is more straightforward.

Survival Hunters can now roll Need on two-handed axes and swords with Agility. ([worldofwarcraft.blizzard.com](https://worldofwarcraft.blizzard.com/news/24296142/hotfixes-august-14-2026))

That includes Maze-roa, Warlord's Fury, another item dropped by the penultimate Venomous Abyss boss. Wowhead confirms that Maze-roa has consequently been added to the Survival Hunter Bonus Roll loot table as well. ([wowhead.com](https://www.wowhead.com/news/bonus-roll-loot-table-changes-in-the-venomous-abyss-raid-382461))

This fixes an obvious problem.

If a spec can properly equip and use an Agility two-hander, the game probably should not behave as though the weapon belongs to somebody else.

That is a fairly low bar for a loot system.

Still good to clear it before raid night.

These Items Can Reach Myth 9/6

The boss these items come from is especially important because late Venomous Abyss loot can reach unusually high upgrade levels.

On Mythic difficulty, both Zul'jin's Guillotine Technique and Maze-roa, Warlord's Fury can drop at Myth 9/6. ([wowhead.com](https://www.wowhead.com/news/bonus-roll-loot-table-changes-in-the-venomous-abyss-raid-382461))

That ties directly into the unusually aggressive Season 2 gear reset we covered in our breakdown of Midnight Season 2's 46-item-level jump. The strongest Season 2 rewards can reach item level 344, making late-raid weapons and trinkets particularly valuable targets.

So this is not Blizzard adjusting who gets to roll on an ordinary pair of boots.

These are exactly the types of items players will build gearing strategies around.

The Bonus Roll Impact Is Bigger Than the Need Roll Change

The really interesting part arrives one week after Season 2 begins.

Nebulous Voidcore Bonus Rolls do not become available with the first Season 2 Great Vault on August 18. They begin with the second Vault on August 25. ([wowhead.com](https://www.wowhead.com/news/bonus-roll-loot-table-changes-in-the-venomous-abyss-raid-382461))

We already covered that limitation in our guide to the first Season 2 Great Vault. Players need to wait until August 25 before converting Vault choices into Voidcores for targeted Bonus Roll attempts.

Once that system activates, the composition of each spec's loot table becomes extremely important.

A Bonus Roll does not simply ask which boss you killed.

It also cares about which rewards your specialization is eligible to receive.

Adding another item therefore changes both what you can win and the odds of winning the particular item you wanted. ([wowhead.com](https://www.wowhead.com/news/bonus-roll-loot-table-changes-in-the-venomous-abyss-raid-382461))

Congratulations.

Your raid loot now contains probability homework.

This Could Change Which Bosses Players Bonus Roll

That matters because Voidcores have become much more valuable in Season 2.

Blizzard has already removed unintended pre-season Voidcores from players because it clearly wants the Season 2 Bonus Roll economy to begin cleanly.

We have also looked at how taking a Voidcore from the Great Vault may sometimes be more valuable than selecting the gear sitting inside it.

That strategy depends heavily on having a desirable, reasonably focused loot table waiting at the other end.

For a Protection Warrior targeting Zul'jin's Guillotine Technique, this hotfix creates a new legitimate Bonus Roll target.

For a Survival Hunter chasing Maze-roa, the same is now true.

The interesting question is whether adding these items improves your options or merely places another object between you and the thing you actually wanted.

World of Warcraft gearing rarely allows happiness without a small statistical footnote.

The Trinket Pool Was Already Changing

The timing is even more notable because Blizzard has already been aggressively adjusting Season 2 trinkets.

Our recent look at Season 2 trinket tuning covered substantial buffs to several new raid and Mythic+ items, alongside nerfs to old favorites such as Gaze of the Alnseer and Crucible of Erratic Energies.

Those changes have since appeared in Blizzard's official hotfix notes, including buffs to Fang of Umbral Malignance, Font of Venomous Rage and several other Season 2 trinkets. ([worldofwarcraft.blizzard.com](https://worldofwarcraft.blizzard.com/news/24296142/hotfixes-august-14-2026))

So Blizzard is adjusting not only how powerful Season 2 loot is.

It is still adjusting who is allowed to receive some of it.

Season 2 Is Arriving in a Very Fluid State

This fits a broader pattern we have been watching all week.

Blizzard has already nerfed several Season 2 class sets before the raid opens, which we covered in our first major Season 2 tier-set tuning breakdown.

It has changed trinkets.

It has changed Sparks.

It has removed unintended Voidcores.

Now it has changed raid loot eligibility.

And even after the raid launches, The Venomous Abyss itself is designed to become progressively more manageable as Season 2 continues.

The message is increasingly obvious.

Do not expect the Season 2 meta on August 18 to look identical a month later.

Check Your Loot Spec Before Spending a Voidcore

The raid opens first.

Bonus Rolls arrive later.

That gives players some time to see how these items perform in real encounters before committing valuable Voidcores.

Protection Warriors and Protection Paladins should pay particularly close attention to Zul'jin's Guillotine Technique.

Survival Hunters should now treat Maze-roa, Warlord's Fury as a real target rather than an inaccessible item sitting provocatively in the dungeon journal.

And everyone planning Bonus Rolls should check the current loot table before spending anything.

Blizzard is still changing those tables.

The Venomous Abyss has not even opened yet.

Apparently the first boss of Season 2 is knowing what you are eligible to loot.
