Beast Mastery Hunters are quietly taking over Midnight Season 2 Mythic+, presumably because somebody eventually remembered that doing damage while running away from mechanics is quite useful.
New Week 5 data from Raider.IO shows Beast Mastery has become the second-most popular specialization in Mythic+, overtaking Blood Death Knight after gaining roughly 0.6 percentage points of representation during the past two weeks. Arcane Mage still holds a comfortable lead, but BM Hunter is now one of the most commonly seen specs across the entire dungeon population.
That is particularly interesting because Beast Mastery is not simply dominating every damage ranking. This looks less like players blindly rerolling to the number-one DPS spec and more like one of WoW's most practical dungeon specs becoming increasingly attractive as Season 2 settles down.
Beast Mastery Just Passed Blood Death Knight
The latest Week 5 Mythic+ data highlighted by Icy Veins places Beast Mastery second in overall spec popularity. BM gained around 0.6% of the population over the past two weeks while both Blood Death Knight and Arcane Mage lost roughly the same amount.
Arcane remains comfortably ahead, with a 2.4 percentage-point advantage over BM, but Hunter's rise is now large enough to affect actual group compositions. One of the most common compositions in the top 30 has replaced Elemental Shaman with Beast Mastery Hunter.
This is not entirely new behaviour. During Season 1, we already saw Beast Mastery remain popular even when it was not sitting at the top of every performance chart. BM's appeal has always been brutally practical: almost its entire rotation works while moving.
When the floor is exploding, the boss is casting something unpleasant and the tank has decided the next pull begins three rooms away, mobility becomes a form of DPS.
Popularity Does Not Mean BM Is the Best DPS
The performance tables tell a more complicated story.
At the 95th percentile, Assassination Rogue has climbed past Arcane into third place, Outlaw is fifth and Frost Death Knight has jumped five positions into eighth. All three Rogue specs now sit inside the top ten.
In extremely high keys from roughly +14 through +22, Arcane Mage has finally overtaken Demonology Warlock for the highest raw dungeon DPS. Windwalker Monk has also moved ahead of Beast Mastery in that dataset.
So BM's rise should not be read as “Hunter is now the strongest spec in Mythic+.” It is something arguably more interesting: players are choosing it heavily even without it owning the top of every chart.
Season 2 Is Rewarding Consistency
That makes sense in the current dungeon environment. As we covered yesterday, more than 91% of recorded Midnight Season 2 Mythic+ keys are now being timed, with more than 81% of runs taking place at +10 or higher.
For the enormous population farming those levels rather than chasing world-record keys, reliability matters. Beast Mastery offers full movement, straightforward AoE through Pack Leader, respectable priority damage and a rotation that does not collapse because the boss placed something unpleasant beneath your feet.
We have seen this pattern before. Back in May, BM was already climbing through Midnight's Season 1 Mythic+ population for many of the same reasons.
The New Tuning Pass Could Change Everything Again
There is one enormous caveat: this Week 5 snapshot comes just as Blizzard's latest class tuning lands.
The 23-spec September 22 tuning pass buffs a large collection of underperforming specializations, including several specs already moving upward in the Mythic+ rankings. The Week 6 picture could therefore look rather different.
For now, though, Beast Mastery is winning one of the statistics that matters most.
People actually want to play it.
Sometimes the best Mythic+ ability is simply being allowed to press your buttons while everybody else is running for their lives.
