Windwalker Monk entered World of Warcraft: Midnight Season 2 with a familiar problem. The spec looked dangerous on paper, had plenty of mobility, excellent control and more martial-arts flair than most fantasy games know what to do with, but there was still the small matter of proving that all of this actually worked once real Mythic+ players started feeding keys into the machine. Three weeks into the season, we are beginning to get an answer. Windwalker has climbed seven positions to become the #6 DPS specialization across all Mythic+ percentiles, while also moving three places to #7 at the 95th percentile.
That is a fairly substantial jump for a spec we were already watching closely before Season 2 launched. Back in August, Windwalker had climbed into S-tier territory during Season 2 PTR testing after repeated buffs pushed its damage well beyond where it had spent much of Midnight’s first season. At the time, the obvious warning applied: PTR rankings are predictions. Live Mythic+ has a delightful habit of taking confident tier lists, folding them neatly and setting them on fire.
This time, however, the prediction is beginning to look rather sensible.
Windwalker Is Rising Across Several Mythic+ Brackets
The latest Week 3 data, based on Raider.IO, Warcraft Logs and Mythicstats information gathered by Icy Veins’ breakdown of the current Season 2 Mythic+ meta, shows Windwalker improving in more than one slice of the playerbase. Across all percentiles, the spec rises seven places into sixth. At the 95th percentile, it gains three positions and lands at #7.
Then we get to the people running keys where every missed interrupt becomes a short documentary about personal responsibility. In the raw damage data from extremely high +14 to +21 runs, Windwalker has also climbed six positions. That does not mean every Monk should immediately march into a +18 and begin issuing instructions, but it does suggest the improvement is not limited to average keys or one particularly cooperative dungeon week.
That matters because Season 2 players are already pushing into higher key levels unusually quickly. Even as overall Mythic+ activity fell after the opening rush, more than three quarters of completed Week 2 keys were already +10 or higher. A spec climbing while the playerbase moves deeper into difficult content is considerably more interesting than one farming impressive numbers in comfortable keys.
The PTR Hype Was Not Entirely Hype
When we first looked at Windwalker before launch, repeated buffs had moved it into the same broad conversation as the strongest Season 2 melee options. The concern was survivability and consistency. Damage has rarely been Windwalker’s only question. The spec has spent years occasionally behaving like a beautifully animated blender that someone forgot to reinforce around the edges.
Season 2 appears to have improved that equation enough for the damage to matter.
The surrounding meta is still moving. Arcane Mage remains extremely strong across the broader playerbase, Arms Warrior continues to dominate the 95th percentile, and Feral Druid has also climbed sharply. We have already seen how quickly the dungeon picture can change through the remarkable Week 2 situation where all three Rogue specs reached the top seven. Season 2 has not yet settled into the sort of rigid five-character photograph that defines the later months of many Mythic+ seasons.
That makes Windwalker’s movement particularly useful. It is not simply inheriting a permanent position in a solved meta. It is climbing while the meta is still being built.
Windwalker Is Making a Case for Itself
There is another reason this matters. Blizzard has openly discussed ways of making future Mythic+ competition less dependent on one universal meta composition, potentially through specialization-specific leaderboards and achievements. Nothing like that is coming during Season 2, but the conversation exists because players often feel pressured to abandon perfectly viable specs once the community decides five alternatives are mathematically superior.
Windwalker currently offers a pleasant counterexample.
It was strong during testing.
It survived the transition into live Season 2.
And by Week 3, it is moving upward rather than quietly disappearing from the charts.
Seven places in one week does not make Windwalker the new uncontested king of Mythic+. Season 2 still has plenty of tuning, gear and increasingly ambitious keys ahead of it.
But the Monk is no longer knocking politely on the meta’s door.
It appears to have used Flying Serpent Kick.
