Demonology Warlock apparently did not finish climbing. Only days after the specialization jumped 18 positions to become one of World of Warcraft’s strongest Heroic raid performers, Blizzard has buffed its Venomous Abyss two-piece tier set bonus. Wild Imps triggered by the set now Implode at 350% effectiveness against their primary target, up from 250%, while secondary targets receive 315% effectiveness instead of 225%. Both numbers represent a 40% increase to the tier-set effect itself.
The timing is particularly interesting because Demonology had already climbed 18 places to #3 in our latest Heroic raid rankings. Blizzard’s own developer note says the Venomous Abyss two-piece was still underperforming compared with other specialization bonuses, so the company is strengthening the set even while Demonology’s overall performance is moving rapidly upward.
The Demonology 2-Piece Implosion Effect Is 40% Stronger
The September hotfix changes the Venomous Abyss two-piece bonus from:
- Main target: 250% → 350% effectiveness
- Other targets: 225% → 315% effectiveness
That works out to a 40% increase in both cases.
It is important not to translate that into “Demonology just got 40% more damage.” The buff applies specifically to the Wild Imp Implosion generated by the Season 2 two-piece bonus, not the entire specialization. Your Shadow Bolt, Felguard, Dreadstalkers and every other source of Demonology damage have not suddenly gained another 40%.
Still, this is not a cosmetic adjustment. Tier bonuses represent a meaningful portion of Season 2 character power, and Blizzard has been willing to move their numbers aggressively since players first raised concerns about the enormous performance differences between Midnight’s Season 2 class sets.
Demonology Was Already Moving Up Before This Buff
What makes the hotfix particularly notable is what happened immediately before it. Demonology recently received substantial buffs to Shadow Bolt, Demonbolt, Wild Imps, Felguard, Call Dreadstalkers and Dominion of Argus demons. Once those changes reached live logs, the spec surged from near the bottom of Heroic rankings into the top three at the 95th percentile.
All three Warlock specs also moved into the Heroic top 10.
Blizzard is therefore not buffing a specialization currently trapped at the bottom of every damage meter. It is correcting one specific part of its gearing package that developers believe remains weaker than comparable tier bonuses.
That distinction matters because Blizzard has already shown it is willing to tune Season 2 tier sets independently from baseline class damage. A specialization can be performing well overall while one particular set bonus still contributes less than intended.
The Buff Should Become More Visible as More Warlocks Finish Their Sets
Season 2 is also still young enough that tier-set ownership is changing rapidly. Every weekly reset puts more players into two-piece and four-piece bonuses through raid drops, Great Vault rewards and other gearing routes.
The Venomous Abyss has several ways to accelerate that process. Ula’tek drops the Slumbering Coil Curio omni-token, allowing players to convert the reward into whichever Season 2 tier slot they need. Meanwhile, the Great Vault and Nebulous Voidcore system gives players additional ways to target valuable raid rewards.
That means the population represented by Warcraft Logs this week will not have exactly the same gearing profile next week. More Demonology Warlocks will complete their tier bonuses, and the bonus they complete will now be considerably stronger than it was at Season 2 launch.
This Makes Early Season 2 Rankings Even Less Permanent
The change is another reminder that September’s class rankings remain a moving target. We have already watched specs gain double-digit ranking positions after a single tuning pass, all three Rogue specializations climb into the Mythic+ top seven, and multiple Season 2 trinkets get buffed, nerfed or fixed after players began using them in real content.
Blizzard warned from the beginning that Season 2 would receive aggressive early class tuning. The developers are following through.
And after The Venomous Abyss Race to World First finally ended with Liquid defeating Ula’tek, Blizzard has considerably more freedom to adjust player power without worrying about changing the outcome of an active World First race.
Demonology Is Becoming One of Season 2’s Most Interesting Specs
None of this guarantees Demonology will dominate the rest of the season. Warcraft Logs rankings will continue changing, gear acquisition will normalize and Blizzard can always tune the spec again if the combined buffs push it beyond the intended range.
But the trajectory is becoming difficult to ignore.
Demonology looked average before Season 2.
Then Blizzard buffed it.
It jumped 18 ranking positions.
Now Blizzard has increased its two-piece Implosion effect by another 40%.
The demons have apparently requested a second recount.
