Mythic Coiled Altar has already been defeated by the Race to World First leaders, but Blizzard is apparently not finished making the penultimate boss of The Venomous Abyss more manageable for everyone coming behind them. The latest World of Warcraft hotfixes reduce the Defilement of the Coiled Altar healing absorb by 20% on Mythic difficulty, directly lowering one of the encounter’s largest raid-wide healing checks. The slightly awkward part is that Blizzard already tried to make essentially this change during World First progression, reverted it, and then watched Team Liquid kill the harder version after 310 pulls.
That history matters because Liquid’s World First Coiled Altar kill required 310 attempts and a five-healer composition. The boss became the defining wall of the raid before Ula’tek, forcing the leading guilds to spend several days solving tight damage requirements, brutal healing pressure and Phase 3 execution. Now the guilds reaching Coiled Altar later in Season 2 will meet a slightly different version of that wall.
Defilement’s Healing Absorb Has Been Cut by 20%
Blizzard’s August 31 hotfix notes make the new change very simple: Defilement of the Coiled Altar’s healing absorb is reduced by 20% on Mythic. The mechanic appears during the later portions of the fight when Zul’jan defiles the altar, placing a healing absorb across the raid while the encounter continues producing additional damage and movement requirements.
In other words, healers are not merely restoring missing health. They first need to chew through a large absorb before their healing can begin moving health bars normally again. Cutting that absorb by 20% does not remove the mechanic, but it gives healing teams substantially more breathing room during one of the encounter’s nastiest pressure windows.
That is particularly relevant because Liquid chose to run five healers for its World First. As we discussed when Liquid finally entered Mythic after five and a half days of aggressive gearing, Race to World First compositions are built around squeezing every possible advantage out of a specific encounter. Coiled Altar demanded enough survival that sacrificing a DPS slot for another healer made sense. A 20% reduction to one of its major healing checks may give later guilds more flexibility.
Blizzard Already Tried This Nerf — Then Reverted It
The strange part is that this particular story started before Liquid’s kill. During the Race to World First, Blizzard briefly pushed another Coiled Altar tuning package that included a 20% reduction to Defilement’s healing absorb, alongside additional reductions to Coalesced Venom and Venom Rupture. Those changes were then reverted because of lockout-related problems before the leading guilds could properly progress with them.
Liquid therefore defeated the version without that second healing nerf. Our breakdown of the 310-pull kill specifically noted that the additional tuning had disappeared before the World First was secured. Blizzard has now brought the Defilement portion back officially, although the August 31 notes do not restore the entire previously attempted tuning package.
That distinction is important. This is not Blizzard suddenly removing another 20% from the whole encounter. It is specifically reducing one major healing absorb.
Two Other Mythic Coiled Altar Problems Were Fixed
The same hotfix batch also corrects two Mythic encounter issues. Coalesced Venom should no longer rarely spawn inside a Virulent Mutation rim, and Soul Sever should no longer incorrectly highlight which Manifestations of Dread will be destroyed. Neither change has the headline number of the Defilement nerf, but both should make progression more consistent by reducing situations where players were receiving misleading information or dealing with awkward spawn behavior.
Consistency matters enormously on a boss this demanding. Coiled Altar already demonstrated during the World First race that small variations can destroy attempts deep into progression. That same difficulty philosophy is visible throughout the raid. We recently looked at how only 231 guilds managed to clear Heroic Ula’tek during the opening week, while Blizzard has openly said it is comfortable making The Venomous Abyss unusually challenging because Season 2 raid rewards are stronger.
The Venomous Abyss Is Already Starting Its Difficulty Curve
This is also exactly the progression curve Blizzard told players to expect. Before the raid opened, the developers explained that The Venomous Abyss would gradually become easier as Season 2 continued. Some of that will happen through increasing player power and better gear. Other parts will come through direct encounter tuning when Blizzard decides a particular mechanic is simply demanding too much.
Coiled Altar has already received both kinds of attention. Players are entering later resets with more tier pieces, Great Vault rewards and Mistcrest upgrades, while Blizzard is simultaneously sanding down specific mechanics. That matters even more because Mythic Coiled Altar can provide some of Season 2’s highest item-level Bonus Roll rewards. There is an enormous incentive for guilds to keep pushing through the encounter once they reach it.
And after Coiled Altar, of course, Blizzard has provided something considerably less relaxing.
So yes, Coiled Altar just got easier.
Enjoy the good news while it lasts.
