Blizzard is suing Nostalrius

Yesterday, we received a letter of formal notice from US and french lawyers, acting on behalf of Blizzard Entertainment, preparing to stand trial against our hosting company OVH and ourselves in less than a week now. This means the de facto end of Nostalrius under its current form.

For people who are not active or do not care for WoW, Nostralius is one of the most (if not the most) popular private server for WoW with over 10,000 players active. Nostralius brings vanilla WoW to anyone, is free, and (obviously) is non-profit. The only use it has is to bring back nostalgia as well as an escape from the content-drought currently inhabitating retail WoW (no patches have been brought to the game with new content since ~July 2015). As a result, players went off to join private servers and have fun in WoW in a different way other than from retail.

What are your thoughts on this?

Personally, I understand that Blizzard can do whatever they want with their game, however, ending a vanilla server that is non-profit and its only use is for enjoyment of the game in its original form, is an act that is simply selfish. In November 2015, Blizzard announced it will no longer report subscriber numbers for WoW, which it has been doing for many years. The retail version of the game, with 5.5 million subscribers (as of their latest report--guaranteed to be much lower) is a nine-year low.

Clearly, Blizzard is attempting to bring players back to retail WoW (why else would they shutdown the most popular private server?), which is in fact releasing a new expansion for WoW, Legion, in summer of 2016 (on or before Sept. 21, 2016).

So, why end a private server when a new expansion is upcoming within the next few months? I do not know. From my logic and point of view as a consumer (who will be buying Legion), the community will most likely shift over to Legion anyway, even if there was Nostralius. Why? Because of the year long content drought has ended! There will finally be new things to do in the game, besides sitting in your garrison clicking a button once a day (that's pretty much the current end-game besides raiding and [useless] dailies).

So, what are your thoughts on this?
