Unfortunately, one of their new Apex talent upgrades had briefly joined the enemy team.
Blizzard has confirmed that ranks 2 and 3 of Dance of Midnight were incorrectly increasing the damage taken by Blood Death Knights. The talent was supposed to reduce incoming damage.
That is not a minor tooltip error.
That is a defensive tank talent quietly replacing mitigation with additional suffering.
The Talent Was Doing the Exact Opposite
Dance of Midnight is Blood Death Knight’s Apex talent, built around Dancing Rune Weapon and intended to strengthen one of the spec’s most important defensive windows.
Rank 2 was designed to reduce damage taken for each active Dancing Rune Weapon.
Instead, the affected ranks increased incoming damage.
Blizzard community manager Kaivax confirmed the problem on the official forums, explaining that a hotfix had already been deployed on Friday.
The official fix reads:
“Fixed a bug that caused the Dance of Midnight Apex talent ranks 2 and 3 to incorrectly increase damage taken. They now decrease damage taken, as intended.”
It is difficult to imagine a cleaner example of a talent failing its one job.
The button said protection.
The code apparently heard challenge mode.
Blood Death Knights Were Being Punished for Upgrading
The especially nasty part is that the bug affected the higher ranks of the Apex talent.
Players investing further into Dance of Midnight were therefore making its defensive component worse rather than stronger.
A Blood Death Knight could activate Dancing Rune Weapon, expect improved survivability and instead take more damage during the window designed to keep them alive.
For a tank spec, that kind of reversed modifier can be brutal.
Blood Death Knight survival already depends heavily on reacting to incoming damage, managing Runic Power and recovering health through Death Strike. Unexpected additional damage can easily make the spec feel far less stable than its numbers suggest.
It could also leave players wondering whether their build, gear or timing was wrong when the actual problem was buried inside the talent itself.
The Hotfix Is Already Active
According to Blizzard, the correction was deployed before the forum announcement and will appear in the next consolidated hotfix notes.
Ranks 2 and 3 of Dance of Midnight should now correctly reduce damage taken.
The original PTR design for rank 2 stated that damage taken would be reduced for each active Dancing Rune Weapon. Blizzard had previously increased that reduction from 4% to 6%, making the talent a meaningful part of Blood’s defensive package.
That made the bug particularly noticeable.
A talent receiving a larger defensive value does not help much when the mathematical sign in front of it is facing the wrong direction.
A Spectacularly Blood Death Knight Bug
Bugs happen during patches, especially when talent systems are being adjusted repeatedly.
Still, this one deserves recognition.
Damage talents occasionally deal too little damage. Healing talents sometimes heal the wrong amount. Defensive talents can fail to activate.
Dance of Midnight went one step further and actively made the tank easier to kill.
At least the problem has now been fixed quickly and officially acknowledged.
Blood Death Knights can return to their usual routine of dropping to 10% health, terrifying the healer and then pretending everything was under control.
