The early Season 2 picture is considerably less flattering.
According to the latest Patch 12.1 PTR tank rankings from Icy Veins, Guardian Druid currently sits in B+ tier for Mythic+.
That does not make Guardian unplayable.
It does mean the Season 1 king has wandered noticeably closer to the middle of the forest.
Guardian Druid Ruled Season 1
Guardian’s strength during Season 1 was not difficult to understand.
The spec combined excellent durability with some of the highest tank damage in the game. It was sturdy enough to survive serious content while contributing numbers that occasionally made actual damage dealers look like they had stopped to answer the door.
Icy Veins ranked Guardian Druid in S tier for Season 1 raid tanking and described it as the highest-damage tank even after balance changes intended to reduce its power.
Guardian was also considered a strong Mythic+ option thanks to reliable survivability, straightforward gameplay and useful Druid tools.
It was not merely safe.
It was safe while hitting things extremely hard.
The Season 2 Apex Rework Changed the Equation
Patch 12.1 gives Guardian Druid a complete Apex talent overhaul.
The new design places more importance on careful Rage management, which should theoretically create more meaningful decisions during combat.
Unfortunately, the current numbers are not rewarding those decisions particularly well.
The latest PTR assessment says Guardian durability remains strong, but its damage output is now among the lowest of all tank specializations.
That is a serious problem in Mythic+.
Tank survivability obviously matters, but modern Mythic+ tanks are also expected to help kill packs, contribute to priority targets and bring enough group value to justify their place over competing specs.
A bear that refuses to die is useful.
A bear that refuses to die while the timer quietly expires is less impressive.
Guardian Still Brings Real Group Value
The situation is not completely grim.
Guardian Druids still bring Mark of the Wild, providing a valuable group-wide boost to damage and survivability.
They also retain the broader Druid utility package, including movement tools, crowd control and support options that can be valuable across different dungeon routes.
The spec’s durability is not currently identified as its main weakness either.
This is not a tank collapsing every time a dungeon mob looks at it aggressively.
The problem is that several competing tanks currently offer strong durability alongside significantly better damage or more desirable group utility.
Protection Paladin Is Looking Far More Dangerous
Protection Paladin is one of the biggest early winners on the Season 2 PTR.
The spec received major talent-tree changes and currently combines high damage, strong durability and one of the best utility packages available to any tank.
Repeated nerfs have already pushed it out of S tier in the current ranking, but it remains in A+.
Protection Warrior is also performing well, sitting in A tier with solid defenses, competitive damage, crowd control and Battle Shout.
Guardian Druid therefore finds itself competing against tanks that are not merely surviving better situations.
They are bringing more damage and highly desirable group benefits while doing it.
This Is Still a PTR Ranking
None of this should be treated as Guardian Druid’s final Season 2 fate.
The rankings are based on an evolving PTR build and are updated as Blizzard applies further class tuning.
Tier lists are also subjective. Dungeon selection, group composition, key level and player skill can all change how valuable a tank feels in practice.
Guardian has already demonstrated how quickly it can become dominant when its damage tuning is generous.
A few numerical adjustments could move the spec considerably higher before Season 2 begins.
Players should therefore avoid deleting their Druids, selling the furniture and releasing every bear-themed battle pet just yet.
The Bear Probably Needs More Damage
Guardian Druid’s early Season 2 problem appears refreshingly simple.
The spec is durable. It has useful tools. It brings Mark of the Wild.
It currently does not hit hard enough.
That is easier to repair than a fundamentally broken defensive kit or an Apex talent design that nobody enjoys using.
For now, however, the contrast is difficult to ignore.
Guardian entered Season 1 as one of WoW’s strongest tanks and its highest-damage armored woodland animal.
On the Season 2 PTR, the bear is still alive.
It is just taking considerably longer to kill anything else.
