Ula’tek has already survived the Race to World First, several rounds of tuning and an increasingly well-equipped population of raiders.
Blizzard has now decided the giant snake still has too much venom.
With this week's regional resets, Stone Venom damage is being reduced by another 40% on all difficulties. The September 21 hotfixes also make Mythic Boiling Venom an Important Aura and fix a bug that could cause Stone Venom to fail to damage players standing far away from Ula’tek.
The change follows an earlier round of Mythic Ula’tek nerfs aimed at Blight Vein and Soul Constrictor, and it is another substantial step toward making The Venomous Abyss finale more approachable for guilds progressing behind the Race to World First.
Stone Venom Is Taking Another Big Hit
According to Blizzard's September 21 hotfix notes, Stone Venom damage will fall by 40% across every difficulty with the weekly restart.
That wording matters because Blizzard had already reduced Stone Venom damage in the September 15 tuning pass. The new adjustment is therefore not merely Blizzard finally applying an old announced change. It is another reduction on top of the tuning Ula’tek has already received.
Stone Venom is closely tied to Mother's Wrath and the encounter's positioning checks, so reducing its damage does not remove the mechanic. Players still have to execute properly. What changes is the punishment when the raid starts accumulating damage from the system.
Forty percent is not exactly a gentle tap.
Mythic Boiling Venom Should Be Easier to Track
Mythic raiders also get a small but useful interface improvement. Boiling Venom is now classified as an Important Aura, making the debuff considerably harder to miss when half the raid frame is already trying to explain why everybody is dying.
Blizzard has also corrected a strange Stone Venom bug where players positioned far from Ula’tek could occasionally avoid the damage completely. So the mechanic is becoming substantially weaker while simultaneously becoming more consistent.
That is probably preferable to discovering that the safest strategy for surviving a giant snake was simply standing very far away and hoping the damage calculation became bored.
Ula’tek Has Been Getting Easier Since the Race Ended
The timing is not particularly surprising. Team Liquid has already defeated Mythic Ula’tek and won the Venomous Abyss Race to World First, which gives Blizzard much more freedom to aggressively tune the encounter for the thousands of guilds arriving later.
The boss that Liquid killed was already different from the original version. Blizzard previously reduced Blight Vein damage by 25%, shortened Soul Constrictor and later made sweeping changes to the Mythic egg mechanics. Putrid Membrane, once capable of lasting an absurd one hour after a Blightscale Spawn hatched, has since been cut to 30 seconds.
This is also exactly the difficulty curve Blizzard told players to expect before Season 2 began. The Venomous Abyss was intended to start hard and gradually become more accessible through both increasing player power and direct encounter tuning.
The Snake Still Has Teeth
A 40% damage reduction sounds enormous, and mathematically it is. But Ula’tek remains the final boss of the tier, with enough overlapping mechanics that reducing one source of raid damage will not suddenly turn Mythic into a sightseeing tour.
What it should do is give progression guilds more room to recover from imperfect execution instead of watching an otherwise promising pull collapse under Stone Venom pressure.
Ula’tek is still dangerous.
She is just becoming slightly less committed to poisoning the entire raid into paste.
