World of Warcraft’s Season 2 gearing spreadsheet is getting another column. Patch 12.1.5 introduces Ascendant Venomstones, a new late-season upgrade currency that can push fully upgraded weapons and trinkets beyond their normal item-level ceiling. This time Blizzard is also expanding the system to necklaces, giving players another important slot where the right secondary stats may remain valuable long after an item would normally have reached the end of its upgrade track.

The system is essentially Season 2’s successor to Ascendant Voidcores, but the necklace addition is new. That makes it particularly relevant in a season where the normal Hero and Myth upgrade tracks already involve a substantial Mistcrest investment. Fully upgrading an item will no longer necessarily mean Blizzard is finished allowing you to make the number larger.

You Need 10 Ascendant Venomstones for One Upgrade

Blizzard’s Patch 12.1.5 preview says players will begin the system by talking to Orin Straylight near the Catalyst in Silvermoon City and accepting the quest Ancient Depths, Ancient Venom. Once that quest is complete and Orin has had time to conduct his research, characters will become eligible to collect Ascendant Venomstones.

Gather 10 Ascendant Venomstones and they can be used on a fully upgraded Season 2:

  • Hero-track weapon
  • Myth-track weapon
  • Hero-track trinket
  • Myth-track trinket
  • Hero-track necklace
  • Myth-track necklace
  • Highest-quality Tidal Crafted weapon, trinket or necklace

The important wording is fully upgraded. Venomstones are not replacing ordinary Mistcrest progression. You first take the item through its normal upgrade path, then the new system provides an additional increase beyond that ceiling.

That makes ordinary upgrade efficiency even more important. We have already looked at how Season 2 Great Vault choices can turn into targeted Bonus Roll opportunities and how taking a Nebulous Voidcore can sometimes be more valuable than accepting the weekly gear itself. Ascendant Venomstones add another question: is this the item you eventually want to push beyond its normal maximum?

Venomstones Come From High-End Season 2 Content

Blizzard has already listed the sources. Ascendant Venomstones will drop from:

  • Every Heroic raid boss
  • Every Mythic raid boss
  • Mythic+ dungeons at +10 or higher
  • Tier 11 Bountiful Delves
  • Nightmare Prey Hunt Champion gear chests

That is a pleasantly broad spread. Raiders are not the only players participating, and Mythic+ players do not need title-level keys simply to engage with the system. +10 is already a very familiar Season 2 breakpoint. In fact, more than half of all completed keys during the first Great Vault week were +10 or higher.

The Tier 11 Delve requirement is more demanding than ordinary Bountiful Delve gearing, but it gives solo-oriented players another path into the same late-season power system.

Necklaces Are the Big New Addition

The necklace support may be the most strategically interesting part. Weapons have obvious value from additional item levels. Trinkets frequently scale through both stats and special effects, which is why Season 2 trinket tuning has been such a moving target since before the season even launched.

Necklaces are different. Their value is often heavily dependent on secondary-stat distribution, sockets and special effects rather than armor or weapon damage. If you already own a necklace with exactly the stats your specialization wants, being able to push it beyond its ordinary cap may reduce the pressure to replace it simply because another neck has a larger item-level label.

That also makes targeted loot more attractive. Blizzard already cut Season 2 raid Bonus Rolls from two Voidcores to one, allowing players to chase specific high-value pieces more efficiently. A perfectly itemized necklace becomes considerably more interesting if Patch 12.1.5 gives it another upgrade life afterwards.

Will Myth Gear Reach Item Level 344?

This is where we need to separate what Blizzard has confirmed from what PTR analysis currently suggests.

Blizzard has confirmed that Ascendant Venomstones push eligible items beyond their normal maximum item level. It has not yet officially stated exactly how many additional upgrade levels each use provides or published a final live upgrade table.

Current PTR analysis suggests the system may work like Season 1’s Ascendant upgrade and provide roughly three additional upgrade levels. If that survives testing, ordinary fully upgraded Myth items could potentially reach around item level 344, matching the elevated reward level already associated with Mythic Coiled Altar and Ula’tek loot.

But that number should remain pencilled in rather than tattooed onto the gearing guide until Blizzard confirms the final implementation. PTR arithmetic has a proud WoW tradition of becoming incorrect shortly after someone builds a spreadsheet around it.

We already saw how unusually strong late-boss Season 2 loot can become when Mythic Coiled Altar and Ula’tek Bonus Rolls reached beyond the ordinary Myth ceiling. Venomstones appear designed to let more carefully selected Season 2 items compete at that level.

Do Not Throw Away a Great Necklace Yet

The practical lesson is simple: if you obtain a Season 2 weapon, trinket or necklace with exceptional stats or an effect you genuinely want, think carefully before replacing it purely because another item has a slightly higher ceiling today.

Patch 12.1.5 may give the better-designed item somewhere else to go.

This also adds another meaningful gearing feature to a patch we originally expected to revolve mainly around Labyrinths and the new raid. As our Patch 12.1.5 overview already showed, Blizzard is treating this as considerably more than a tiny mid-season update.

Ten Venomstones.

One fully upgraded item.

Another increase beyond the cap.

And for the first time, your necklace gets invited too.
