It is an appropriately expensive addition to a patch that is becoming much larger than its .5 numbering initially suggested. We already knew from our Patch 12.1.5 release-date breakdown that Labyrinths and another one-boss raid were coming. Blizzard has now added Warband improvements, new upgrade systems and what is essentially a mobile Azerothian service station for people with alarming bank balances.
The Sporebearer Fungal Strider Costs 5 Million Gold
The basic Sporebearer Fungal Strider costs 5,000,000 gold when Patch 12.1.5 arrives. Blizzard says it will be sold in Harandar and comes with two useful services immediately:
- Mailbox
- Repair vendor
That alone makes it more than another collector mount. The interesting part, however, is that those utility positions are customizable. Players can purchase access to additional NPCs and swap them onto the mount depending on what services they want available while travelling.
That is genuinely new. WoW has had expensive vendor mounts for years, and collectors have become very familiar with paying extraordinary sums for convenience, but Blizzard has never previously built a mount around a modular NPC system.
Considering Patch 12.1 was already overflowing with mounts designed to tempt collectors, apparently the next evolutionary step was giving one of them employees.
The Auction House Costs Another 1.5 Million Gold
The most valuable optional NPC is naturally the Auction House.
Unlocking an Auction House NPC costs 1,500,000 gold. Once purchased, it can replace one of the mount’s existing utility options, giving players portable Auction House access wherever mounts can be used.
That immediately invites comparisons with the Mighty Caravan Brutosaur, Battle for Azeroth’s famous five-million-gold Auction House mount. The original Brutosaur became one of WoW’s most notorious limited-time gold sinks when Blizzard removed it from its normal vendor at the end of BFA and moved it to the Black Market Auction House.
The Sporebearer Fungal Strider follows a similar philosophy, but the modular design is more interesting. Auction House access is not permanently baked into the mount. It is a service you unlock and then choose to equip.
That also makes the mount particularly relevant to gold-makers. We have just seen how quickly tradeable Mythic Venomous Abyss BoEs can turn the Auction House into part of endgame gearing. Being able to summon an auctioneer almost anywhere is hardly mandatory, but convenience has always had an impressive ability to become indispensable approximately fifteen minutes after you buy it.
Transmog Costs Another 500,000 Gold
The second currently available optional service is a Transmogrifier for 500,000 gold.
That brings the current maximum price to:
- Sporebearer Fungal Strider — 5,000,000 gold
- Auction House unlock — 1,500,000 gold
- Transmogrifier unlock — 500,000 gold
- Total — 7,000,000 gold
The transmog option is slightly amusing because Midnight has already turned changing clothes into a respectable gold-removal industry. Earlier this year we looked at how WoW’s revamped transmog system was quietly becoming a substantial gold sink, before Blizzard eventually slashed some of those costs following player backlash.
Patch 12.1.5 has apparently found another way to charge half a million gold for fashion.
At least this time it comes with transportation.
You Cannot Use Every NPC at the Same Time
Buying every unlock does not mean the mount suddenly grows four passengers and becomes a travelling capital city. The Fungal Strider currently has two utility slots. If you own more services than the mount can hold, you choose which NPCs are active.
Blizzard says players will be able to return to an NPC in Harandar and swap their available mount services. You might run Auction House plus mailbox while farming, then switch to repair plus transmog before raid night.
The interesting part is that Blizzard is already considering additional NPC types in future patches. Nothing beyond the auctioneer and transmogrifier has been confirmed, so we should not start promising portable banks, barber shops or profession tables yet. But the architecture is clearly designed for more than the launch selection.
That makes the mount itself more valuable than a fixed list of current services suggests. You are effectively buying access to a platform Blizzard may continue expanding.
The Mount Disappears After Midnight — The NPC Unlocks Do Not
There is one very important deadline. Blizzard says the Sporebearer Fungal Strider itself will only be available for purchase until the end of World of Warcraft: Midnight.
Once the expansion ends, the mount leaves its normal vendor.
However, there is a useful distinction: additional NPC unlocks will remain available indefinitely. So if you buy the five-million-gold mount during Midnight but cannot immediately justify another 1.5 million for the Auction House, you do not need to panic-buy the entire seven-million package before the expansion ends.
The important purchase is the mount itself.
That makes this another example of WoW using availability windows to motivate collectors. We recently saw two Midnight dungeon mounts temporarily disappear when Season 2 began, while Season 1 closed the door on an enormous collection of seasonal rewards.
The Fungal Strider at least gives players considerably more warning.
Seven Million Gold Is a Very Deliberate Gold Sink
There is no character power attached to this mount. It does not increase raid damage. It will not improve your Mythic+ score. Ula’tek would have remained equally unimpressed if Team Liquid had arrived riding twenty mushrooms with auctioneers attached.
That makes it almost the ideal gold sink.
Players with enormous reserves receive an expensive convenience and prestige item. Blizzard removes millions of gold from the economy without attaching combat power to the purchase. Everyone else can simply not buy it.
September is already financially dangerous for collectors because the special Trading Post Outlet has brought back a huge selection of older rewards, while Blizzard is simultaneously handing out a free flying quilt mount through the BlizzCon 2026 viewing campaign.
The contrast is quite elegant.
