Cooking has spent a large part of World of Warcraft’s history occupying that uncomfortable space between “actually useful” and “something I will definitely level later.”
WoW Forever is making it considerably harder to ignore.
A growing list of cooked foods in the current beta now provides a new Well Fed experience bonus that increases XP gained from kills by 5%. The effect sits alongside the food’s normal stat bonus, meaning a meal can simultaneously provide Strength, Agility, Attack Power, Spell Damage or another benefit while also making every creature you kill slightly more valuable.
And this is not restricted to expensive endgame recipes. Some of the foods receiving the bonus are available almost immediately.
The 5% XP Bonus Starts at Cooking Skill 1
According to the current list of Forever foods carrying the new experience effect, Brilliant Smallfish can provide the bonus at just Cooking skill 1. From there, dozens of recipes across the profession have already been updated.
Examples include Spiced Wolf Meat with an Agility bonus, Smoked Bear Meat with Strength, Rainbow Fin Albacore with Spell Damage and Brilliant Smallfish with Attack Power. Higher-level recipes scale the secondary bonuses upward, with foods such as Bear Bruscitti granting 20 Strength and Mightfish Steak providing 40 Attack Power while still carrying the extra experience effect.
The important detail is that the 5% applies to experience gained from kills. It is not a blanket 5% increase to quest turn-ins, exploration or every other source of XP.
Still, when Forever’s leveling pace is currently almost identical to Classic, an extra 5% from the monsters you are killing anyway is hardly decorative.
Cooking Suddenly Has a Reason to Stay Leveled
This fits perfectly with Blizzard’s broader attempt to make professions matter throughout the 1 to 60 journey.
Forever is adding more than 600 new profession recipes, while the profession interface is getting recipe tracking, search tools and better filters. Camping also puts tradeskills directly into one of Forever’s major new progression systems.
Giving Cooking a leveling bonus solves a very simple problem: players now have a reason to keep it roughly synchronized with their character instead of discovering at level 43 that they possess exactly nine Cooking skill and a bag full of raw wolf meat.
It also makes Fishing rather more attractive. Several fish-based recipes currently provide the XP buff, including Brilliant Smallfish, Longjaw Mud Snapper, Smoked Sagefish and later options such as Nightfin Soup and Mightfish Steak.
Not Every Food Has Been Updated Yet
There is one large beta-shaped warning attached to all of this.
Not every food currently has the experience component. Some recipes still provide their traditional Well Fed effect without the additional 5%, and Blizzard may continue adding or adjusting them in later beta builds.
So this is not yet a final list of the best leveling foods for launch. It is a snapshot of how the system currently works.
Our WoW Forever beginner’s guide already recommends keeping professions active while leveling. With Cooking now capable of increasing kill XP as well as improving your stats, that advice has become considerably easier to justify.
Classic taught us to carry food because health bars eventually become empty.
Forever is giving us another reason.
Apparently dinner is now part of the leveling route.
