World of Warcraft players will get their first serious look at The Unbinding of Kith’ix next week. Blizzard has scheduled the first Heroic and Mythic raid testing for the new Patch 12.1.5 one-boss raid on Wednesday, September 16, with Heroic Kith’ix opening at 22:30 CEST and Mythic following one hour later at 23:30 CEST. Players do not need a perfectly geared level 90 character prepared in advance either: Blizzard will scale participants to level 90 and an appropriate item level for the encounter.

That makes September 16 the first real opportunity to see whether Kith’ix’s unusual encounter design is as dangerous as his loot table is attractive. We already know from our breakdown of Kith’ix’s Myth 9/6 loot that the boss can drop item level 344 gear on Mythic, including Cantrip armor that can be converted into tier pieces without losing its special effects. Next week, players finally get to discover what Blizzard expects them to survive in exchange.

Kith’ix Raid Testing Starts September 16

Blizzard’s current PTR schedule is:

  • Heroic Kith’ix — September 16 at 22:30 CEST
  • Mythic Kith’ix — September 16 at 23:30 CEST

For North American players, those times correspond to 13:30 PDT / 16:30 EDT for Heroic and 14:30 PDT / 17:30 EDT for Mythic.

Blizzard warns that raid-testing schedules are inherently flexible. Encounter times can be moved, the boss being tested can change, and an entire session may be cancelled if PTR bugs or server problems make useful testing impossible.

So September 16 should be treated as the current plan rather than a sacred appointment carved into an Amani temple wall.

You Can Teleport Directly Into the Raid

Getting into the test is deliberately simple.

While The Unbinding of Kith’ix is open for testing, players can speak with Nexus-Lord Donjon Rade in:

  • Silvermoon City
  • Stormwind
  • Orgrimmar

The NPC will teleport players directly into the raid zone. The teleport option only appears while the encounter is actually available for testing, so there is no point arriving several hours early and accusing the Nexus-Lord of poor customer service.

Blizzard has also placed several PTR vendors in the major cities to make endgame testing easier. These include profession vendors and trainers, class-set vendors, PvP gear vendors and trinket vendors. The goal is to let testers build something resembling a functional raid character without first reproducing several weeks of live-server gearing.

Your Character Will Be Scaled to Level 90

Blizzard says players can bring whichever character they prefer.

For raid testing, characters will be scaled to effective level 90 and adjusted to an appropriate item-level threshold for the encounter being tested. That means the purpose of next week’s session is not to determine whether somebody happened to copy the right character onto PTR.

The goal is to test Kith’ix himself.

This should also make the Heroic-to-Mythic comparison considerably cleaner. Blizzard can control the approximate gear environment while seeing how players handle the encounter’s mechanics on each difficulty.

Kith’ix Has Two Very Different Phases

The Dungeon Journal already gives us a good idea of what testers will be facing.

During the first phase, Kith’ix summons his Voidswarm while attacking the raid with dark magic. At 100 energy, he begins Suffocating Darkness, and Lady Liadrin responds by holding the darkness back while preparing Divine Radiance.

Raiders will need to manage the Aqir adds properly because enemies still alive when Suffocating Darkness begins can become significantly more dangerous.

The fight changes at 25% health.

Kith’ix uses Stygian Howl to stun the raid, Lady Liadrin rescues the group with Last Light, and the encounter becomes a final damage race. Players must kill Kith’ix before Eightfold Eclipse extinguishes Liadrin’s protection.

That structure makes the encounter sound almost like two different exams stapled together. First, execute the add and darkness mechanics correctly. Then, once the boss reaches 25%, stop admiring the scenery and kill him before the lights go out.

Mythic Is Where the Loot Becomes Particularly Interesting

The Mythic testing session is especially relevant because Kith’ix has one of the strangest loot tables Blizzard has added in Season 2.

As we covered in our complete Kith’ix loot breakdown, Mythic gear currently drops directly at item level 344 / Myth 9/6.

The boss also carries:

  • four Cantrip armor pieces on tier-compatible slots
  • three new trinkets
  • two weapons
  • a Cantrip ring
  • a Housing decor item
  • a new Hearthstone

The armor is particularly valuable because Catalyst conversion can preserve the Cantrip effect while turning the item into a class-set piece. Several of those effects also gain additional value when combined with Venomcursed gear from Ula’tek.

Kith’ix therefore does not merely drop higher numbers. His loot is deliberately connected to the gearing ecosystem Blizzard built around The Venomous Abyss.

That ecosystem is expanding again in Patch 12.1.5 through Ascendant Venomstones, which can push selected fully upgraded Hero, Myth and crafted weapons, trinkets and necklaces beyond their normal Season 2 ceiling.

The New Raid Continues Directly From Ula’tek

The Unbinding of Kith’ix is not a detached bonus encounter.

Kith’ix was imprisoned beneath the Vaults of Ula’tek, and Ula’tek’s defeat weakens the restraints keeping the ancient C’Thraxxi contained. Patch 12.1.5 sends players deeper beneath the Coiled Isle to deal with the consequence.

That makes the raid a direct continuation of the storyline that ended when Team Liquid defeated Mythic Ula’tek and won the Venomous Abyss Race to World First.

Blizzard describes the new encounter as the climactic confrontation of the current Quel’thalas and Zul’Aman storyline, with Lady Liadrin fighting alongside the raid rather than simply appearing after the boss dies to discuss what everyone just witnessed.

Very considerate of her.

How Long Will the Raid Test Last?

There is no guaranteed duration.

Blizzard says raid-testing sessions often last around one hour per encounter, but that is only a rough expectation. The purpose is to gather enough information to evaluate tuning, mechanics and bugs. Once Blizzard believes it has sufficient data, the test can be closed.

With only one boss being tested, that means anyone interested in participating should be ready at the scheduled start rather than assuming Mythic Kith’ix will still be open several hours later.

Feedback threads will be posted on the PTR forums before testing, and players can also report bugs using the in-game Issue Reporter.

September 16 Is Kith’ix’s First Real Test

Until now, most of what we know about Kith’ix has come from datamining.

We have the map.

We have the Dungeon Journal.

We have the Myth 9/6 loot.

We know Lady Liadrin participates in the encounter.

But September 16 is when raid groups begin putting all of those mechanics together on Heroic and Mythic.

Heroic begins at 22:30 CEST.

Mythic begins at 23:30 CEST.

Bring whichever character you want.

Blizzard handles the scaling.

Kith’ix handles the rest.
