This is the latest chapter in the same problem we covered when players discovered that their Tidal Spark Dust tracker could say they had earned four Sparks while only two actual Sparks existed. At the time, the practical problem was obvious: WoW’s catch-up system believed the character was fully caught up and therefore stopped awarding the currency that was physically missing. Blizzard’s first repair fixed many characters. Apparently the spreadsheet still had survivors.
Blizzard Says Some Players Are Still Missing Sparks
In an official September 2 update, community manager Kaivax acknowledged that Blizzard’s previous remedy left a number of players without Sparks of Tides that were legitimately due to them.
Blizzard says it is continuing to work on the issue, is getting closer to a solution and expects to restore Sparks to most players who are still missing them over the next few days. The company plans to update the same forum thread once that restoration effort is complete.
That is an important change from the situation two weeks ago. When we first documented the broken Spark counter, there was no universal workaround and no confirmed way for affected players to force the missing currency to appear. Blizzard is now explicitly saying another corrective wave is coming.
The Spark Problem Started Before Season 2 Properly Began
The trouble dates back to Patch 12.1’s pre-season week. Season 2 Sparks began dropping early, something we highlighted in our Patch 12.1 preparation checklist. Most players were supposed to begin accumulating the new crafting currency at the same controlled pace.
Then an older one-time quest complicated things. Characters that had never completed Midnight: World Tour could obtain an additional Spark, creating the strange situation where some neglected alts could temporarily begin Season 2 with an extra Spark. Blizzard responded by increasing the catch-up ceiling so everyone could eventually reach the same total.
That solution produced another problem. During the following week, some characters received only two actual Sparks while their Tidal Spark Dust tracker jumped ahead as though four had been awarded. Once the tracker reached its seasonal cap, ordinary catch-up sources stopped producing the missing Sparks.
The currency system had successfully achieved equality on paper.
The bags remained unconvinced.
The First Restoration Did Not Fix Everyone
Blizzard began restoration and cleanup waves during the August 25 reset. Some missing Sparks were restored, while the company also said rare cases involving players accidentally receiving Sparks above the intended cap would be cleaned up.
But player reports continued. Characters could still show progression such as five earned Sparks in the tracker while having received fewer actual Spark items. Blizzard’s September 2 statement now explicitly confirms that its previous remedy left players behind.
That matters because Sparks are not simply another cosmetic currency. Most important crafted Season 2 items require multiple Sparks, and missing two can directly delay a weapon, embellishment or another high-value craft. We warned about exactly that when outlining the unusual Season 2 rollover and early Spark schedule.
At this point in the season, being two Sparks behind can mean being one entire crafted item behind another character whose currency progression worked correctly.
Do Not Judge Your Spark Total From the Tracker Alone
If you think you are affected, the same check we recommended originally still applies. Compare:
- How many Sparks of Tides you have actually received or spent.
- What your Tidal Spark Dust tracker says you have earned.
If those numbers cannot reasonably be reconciled with your completed crafts, you may still be part of the affected group.
Do not assume the tracker itself proves that the Sparks reached your character. That was the entire problem in the first place.
This is particularly worth checking before committing expensive materials to another craft. Season 2 gearing already includes Great Vault decisions involving Nebulous Voidcores, Myth-track raid rewards and Mistcrest upgrades. Crafted gear is supposed to provide a more controlled alternative to those random systems. It works considerably less well when the crafting currency exists primarily in an accounting field.
You Probably Do Not Need to Abandon Your Crafting Plans Yet
The good news in Blizzard’s latest update is that this is no longer being treated as a finished restoration where unlucky edge cases are simply stuck permanently behind. Blizzard says active work is continuing and expects most remaining eligible characters to be restored shortly.
That makes waiting for the announced restoration more sensible than restructuring an entire gearing plan around the missing Sparks right now. Players already have plenty of other Season 2 progression available through raids, Mythic+, Delves and the Great Vault, while the new Voidcore option has made weekly gearing choices considerably more flexible.
And if your eventual Spark craft involves tier slots, remember that Season 2’s Catalyst now preserves the original secondary stats and special effects of converted gear, making crafted and seasonal gearing decisions slightly less hostile than they used to be.
For Now, Check Your Bags Again
Blizzard says another Spark restoration is coming over the next few days and will post again when the process is finished.
So if your character still appears two Sparks behind, the situation is not officially closed.
Check the tracker.
Check your crafts.
Check your bags.
Then wait for Blizzard’s next restoration wave.
Season 2 has several complicated gearing systems.
Counting to five was not supposed to be one of them.
