World of Warcraft’s Venomous Abyss raid skip is finally available, allowing players who have completed The Venomous Abyss: Deception Unmasked to bypass most of the raid and head toward The Coiled Altar. There is, however, one small Blizzard-shaped complication: this is not a convenient teleport from the entrance to the penultimate boss. You still have to kill Nek’zali the Soulcoiler first, travel into the Twin Fangs area and speak with Zul’jarra before the route to The Coiled Altar opens.
For guilds now farming late-boss loot after The Venomous Abyss Race to World First ended with Team Liquid defeating Ula’tek, the skip is still enormously useful. Coiled Altar and Ula’tek contain some of the strongest loot in Season 2, including the raid’s special Myth 9/6 rewards. It simply turns out that Blizzard’s definition of “skip” still includes one boss, some walking and enough temple architecture to remind you where you are.
How to Unlock the Venomous Abyss Raid Skip
The skip comes from the quest The Venomous Abyss: Deception Unmasked. To complete it, you need three Mask Fragments, which means defeating The Coiled Altar across three different weekly lockouts on the relevant difficulty.
In practical terms:
- Pick up The Venomous Abyss: Deception Unmasked.
- Defeat The Coiled Altar on the relevant difficulty.
- Collect one Mask Fragment.
- Repeat across three different weeks.
- Complete the quest to unlock the shortcut.
Players who started working on the quest during the opening weeks of Season 2 can therefore complete it now. That timing feels particularly appropriate considering what The Coiled Altar originally demanded. Team Liquid needed 310 pulls to defeat Mythic Coiled Altar during the Race to World First, and Blizzard subsequently reapplied a 20% Defilement healing-absorb nerf after Liquid’s kill.
Three weekly clears sounds considerably friendlier by comparison.
Normal, Heroic and Mythic Have Separate Skip Quests
There is another important detail before your raid leader cheerfully announces that somebody completed the quest on Normal and therefore the entire guild can retire from clearing trash forever.
Normal, Heroic and Mythic use separate versions of Deception Unmasked.
Completing the quest on one difficulty should therefore not be treated as an automatic unlock for the others. If your guild intends to use the shortcut for Heroic farm nights, make sure the appropriate Heroic version has been completed. The same applies to Mythic.
That matters because the strongest late-raid rewards become considerably more valuable at higher difficulties. As we covered in our Season 2 Great Vault and Nebulous Voidcore guide, Mythic Coiled Altar and Ula’tek can drop item level 344 gear beyond the ordinary Myth 6/6 ceiling. Once progression turns into farming, being able to reach those encounters faster becomes a very useful weekly tool.
The Skip Does Not Let You Walk Straight to Coiled Altar
Once the shortcut is unlocked, you still begin The Venomous Abyss normally.
The current route works like this:
- Enter The Venomous Abyss.
- Defeat Nek’zali the Soulcoiler.
- Use the blood to open the first door.
- Move into the Twin Fangs encounter room.
- Speak with Zul’jarra.
- The route toward The Coiled Altar opens.
So the shortcut bypasses the raid’s middle progression, but Nek’zali remains mandatory. This is probably the detail most likely to confuse groups during the first week of using it, particularly because “skip to Coiled Altar” sounds suspiciously like a direct skip to Coiled Altar.
World of Warcraft has always maintained a healthy distinction between what a system is called and how many corridors it contains.
You Can Still Go Back for the Bosses You Skipped
Using the shortcut does not permanently remove the remaining encounters from the lockout.
After killing Ula’tek, groups can still return and defeat bosses they bypassed. There is one important progression rule: The Twin Fangs still requires both Vashnik and Sszorak to be defeated if you decide to go back for that encounter.
That makes the skip flexible rather than an all-or-nothing choice. A guild that only wants Coiled Altar and Ula’tek can take the short route. A group that still needs specific loot, tier pieces or additional boss kills can return to the middle wings afterward.
That is worth remembering because The Venomous Abyss still contains plenty of targeted gearing opportunities. Blizzard altered several Venomous Abyss loot tables immediately before the raid opened, while its named lieutenants can also drop nine different Season 2 raid BoEs. A full clear can therefore remain worthwhile even after your group gains access to the shortcut.
When Should You Actually Use the Raid Skip?
The obvious use case is a farm group targeting the final two encounters.
Coiled Altar and Ula’tek offer some of Season 2’s most valuable loot, and the raid has now reached the point where many guilds are moving from progression into repeat clears. Heroic Ula’tek was initially difficult enough that only 231 guilds defeated the boss during the first week, but Blizzard always intended The Venomous Abyss to become progressively easier as Season 2 continued.
Faster access to the final encounters fits neatly into that transition.
If your group still needs loot from Entombed Sentinels, The Lost Explorers, Vashnik, Sszorak or The Twin Fangs, however, skipping them simply creates another journey later. The same applies if you are trying to maximize raid boss kills for weekly gearing objectives rather than targeting one particular item.
The best raid skip is the one that skips bosses you genuinely do not need.
A revolutionary concept, but WoW gearing has occasionally required more complicated mathematics.
The Venomous Abyss Farm Phase Has Officially Begun
The arrival of Deception Unmasked feels like another small milestone for Season 2. The Race to World First is finished. Coiled Altar and Ula’tek have already received multiple tuning passes. More players are completing their tier sets, Myth gear is spreading through the population and guilds are beginning to care less about clearing every room simply because Blizzard placed a boss inside it.
Now the raid itself is becoming faster to farm.
Just remember the actual route:
Kill Nek’zali. Open the blood door. Reach the Twin Fangs room. Talk to Zul’jarra. Then skip to Coiled Altar.
It is a shortcut.
Blizzard never promised it would be short.
