That makes this a particularly useful week for alts and characters still carrying one stubbornly bad slot. It also arrives at an interesting point in Season 2. almost 78% of completed Mythic+ keys are already +10 or higher, meaning much of the active playerbase has moved well beyond introductory gearing. The Dungeon Event gives everyone else a much simpler route toward Hero gear without requiring a high key, a raid group or a detailed explanation of why Murder Row absolutely needed that fifth trash pack.
How to Complete Emissary of War
Pick up Emissary of War from Archmage Aethas Sunreaver and complete four dungeons on Mythic difficulty. Both Mythic 0 and Mythic+ count toward the four required completions, so players already planning their weekly keys do not need to run a separate set of dungeons purely for the quest.
The basic process is:
- Pick up Emissary of War.
- Complete four Mythic dungeons.
- Mythic 0 or Mythic+ both count toward quest progress.
- Turn in the quest for a Heroic Cache of Amani Treasures.
- Open the cache for one Hero-track Venomous Abyss item between item level 305 and 315.
The cache rewards gear appropriate for your current loot specialization, so it is worth checking that setting before opening it if your character regularly swaps roles. The item itself comes from the Venomous Abyss reward pool rather than the ordinary dungeon loot table.
That creates a nice opportunity for characters that are not regularly clearing Heroic raid bosses. the final Venomous Abyss Raid Finder wing is now open, but the Dungeon Event gives you access to Hero-quality raid loot while completing content you may already have been planning to run anyway.
Normal, Heroic and Mythic 0 Dungeons Drop Extra Loot
The weekly cache is only half of the event.
While the Midnight Dungeon Event is active, the final boss of Midnight dungeons drops an additional piece of loot on:
- Normal
- Heroic
- Mythic 0
This is where the event becomes particularly attractive for fresh level 90 characters. Mythic 0 normally drops item level 292 gear in Season 2, and Blizzard changed Season 2 Mythic 0 dungeons to a daily reset rather than the weekly lockout used during pre-season. That means players can repeatedly target individual dungeon loot tables throughout the week while benefiting from the additional final-boss drop.
For an established main wearing mostly Myth gear, a second piece of Mythic 0 loot may inspire roughly the same emotional response as finding twelve silver in an old coat. For an alt with several Champion or Veteran pieces, it is considerably more useful.
Mythic+ Counts for the Quest but Does Not Drop the Extra Item
This is the rule most worth remembering.
Mythic+ dungeons count toward Emissary of War, but the bonus final-boss loot does not apply inside Mythic+.
So there are effectively two different ways to approach the event.
If your priority is your Great Vault, crests and high-end Season 2 progression, run your normal Mythic+ keys. Four completions will finish Emissary of War naturally, and you can collect the Heroic Cache afterward. our Season 2 Great Vault strategy already explains why planning your weekly dungeon slots around useful reward thresholds matters, and there is little reason to abandon that plan merely because the Dungeon Event is active.
If your priority is raw quantities of gear for an alt, however, Mythic 0 becomes much more attractive. You still get quest credit, the difficulty is considerably lower than +10 Mythic+, and the final boss provides an additional event drop.
Same quest progress.
More ordinary loot.
Fewer discussions about route percentage.
This Is a Good Week to Target Specific Dungeon Items
The additional loot also improves the odds when you are hunting one specific item from a Midnight dungeon.
Season 2 contains several dungeon items that remain attractive well beyond the first gearing week, particularly trinkets and unusually itemized weapons. Running the appropriate Mythic 0 repeatedly while the event is active gives you more loot opportunities than during an ordinary week.
Dungeon knowledge can make those runs much faster too. several Season 2 dungeons contain hidden buffs and usable objects, including Murder Row’s Concealed Pistol and permanent bonuses in Altar of Fangs. We have also covered the Altar of Fangs party-wide Versatility interaction, which remains useful whether you are pushing a key or simply clearing the dungeon efficiently for loot.
The event does not make the desired trinket drop automatically.
World of Warcraft has standards.
It merely gives the dice another opportunity to disappoint you.
The Heroic Cache Can Reach Item Level 315
The headline reward remains the Heroic Cache of Amani Treasures.
Current event information lists its Venomous Abyss reward range as item level 305 to 315. That is Hero-track gear, making the cache relevant even to characters already well beyond Mythic 0 equipment.
It also complements Season 2’s increasingly crowded gearing ecosystem. the Great Vault can provide gear or Nebulous Voidcores for targeted raid rewards, high Mythic+ keys feed Myth gear into the Vault, Delves offer another progression route, and Patch 12.1.5’s Labyrinth questline is preparing another path toward selectable Myth armor.
Emissary of War is much simpler.
Complete four Mythic dungeons.
Open box.
Hope trousers happen.
Alts Benefit Most From the Event
For established Season 2 mains, the weekly Hero cache is still worth collecting because four Mythic+ runs may already be part of the weekly routine. The real winner, though, is the alt army.
A fresh or lightly geared level 90 can combine:
- four Mythic 0 completions for Emissary of War
- additional final-boss loot from those dungeons
- one guaranteed Hero-track Venomous Abyss item
- Great Vault progress
- normal Season 2 crest and gearing progression
And because Mythic 0 now resets daily, you are not limited to one attempt at a useful dungeon each week.
This also happens while Winds of Mysterious Fortune is giving characters from level 10–89 a 20% experience bonus. Level an alt quickly, hit 90, then immediately discover that the real leveling system was item level all along.
How Long Does the Midnight Dungeon Event Last?
The event remains active until the next regional reset:
- North America: September 15
- Europe: September 16
That gives European players until Wednesday’s reset to complete Emissary of War and take advantage of the extra dungeon loot.
There is no particular reason to leave the quest until the final evening. Four Mythic dungeons can be completed quickly, especially if you use Mythic 0, and players doing Mythic+ will likely finish it without changing their weekly routine at all.
The important thing is remembering the distinction.
Mythic+ counts toward the quest.
Mythic+ does not receive the bonus final-boss item.
Normal, Heroic and Mythic 0 do.
And after four Mythic completions, Blizzard hands you a Heroic Cache containing Venomous Abyss gear up to item level 315.
For once, Emissary of War really does involve a reasonable amount of war.
Four dungeons.
