The Venomous Abyss has spent the opening weeks of Midnight Season 2 establishing itself as one of those World of Warcraft raids where the second half feels considerably more interested in killing you than the first half did. Blizzard has now decided that enough guilds have experienced the full educational program. With the September 15 tuning pass, Sszorak, The Twin Fangs, The Coiled Altar and Ula’tek are all being nerfed, meaning exactly half of the eight-boss raid is becoming easier. Some changes are modest damage reductions. Others remove entire chunks of mechanical pressure. And then there is Mythic Ula’tek, where Blizzard has looked at an hour-long punishment mechanic and apparently concluded that perhaps thirty seconds will make the point just as effectively.

The full tuning pass was announced ahead of this week’s maintenance and targets Heroic, Mythic and Raid Finder in different ways. According to the complete September 15 Venomous Abyss tuning notes, the biggest changes are concentrated in the raid’s late-game progression walls. That makes sense. The Race to World First is over, Team Liquid has already defeated Ula’tek and secured its fifth consecutive Race to World First victory, and ordinary Mythic guilds are now arriving at encounters originally tuned to stop the best players in the world for hundreds of pulls. The raid difficulty curve is entering its next phase.

Sszorak and Twin Fangs Get Straightforward Nerfs

Sszorak receives the simplest adjustments. Tempest damage is reduced by 20% on Heroic and Mythic, while Caustic Claws no longer creates a Caustic Residue pool on Heroic. That should reduce both raw healing pressure and the amount of floor-management required as the fight develops. Sszorak had already received earlier scaling adjustments for smaller Normal and Heroic groups, so Blizzard clearly continues to sand down the parts of the encounter creating disproportionate punishment rather than simply lowering the boss’s health.

The Twin Fangs receive a similar treatment. Corrosive Spit damage drops by 20% on Mythic, Rouse the Brood now creates only ten Broodlings of Ithraz, and Visceral Burst gets an extra half-second of cast time. None of those changes fundamentally rewrite the fight, but together they reduce the number of situations where one missed reaction turns into a very expensive lesson about snakes.

That is particularly useful now that guilds are farming deeper into the instance through the newly available Venomous Abyss raid skip. Blizzard clearly wants the back half of the raid to become progressively more accessible without making the encounters unrecognizable.

Coiled Altar Gets Another Major Pass

The Coiled Altar is where the patch notes become considerably longer. Venom Rupture damage falls by 10% on Heroic and Mythic, while Mutagenic Venom is reduced by 15%. Wail of Terror gets longer cast times on both difficulties, giving players more reaction time, and Blizzard is making Spiteful Soulcoiler positioning more predictable. On Mythic, one Soulcoiler will now always appear near Malacrass.

Several of the encounter’s more chaotic overlaps are being cleaned up as well. Dreadmarch no longer targets progressively more players as the phase continues. Manifestations of Dread will deprioritize players already carrying Unnerving Fixation. Manifestations revealed through Wail of Terror remain visible for three additional seconds, and the number of Fragments of Malacrass during the Mythic intermission is reduced by 25%.

This is not Coiled Altar’s first appointment with Blizzard’s tuning department. Blizzard previously reapplied a 20% Defilement healing-absorb nerf after Liquid’s kill, and the fight earned its reputation before that when Liquid needed 310 pulls to secure the World First. The new pass goes much further than simply reducing one healing check. Blizzard is making the encounter more predictable, reducing simultaneous pressure and removing some of the escalation that made later phases so unforgiving.

Ula’tek’s One-Hour Punishment Is Finally Becoming 30 Seconds

Then we reach Ula’tek.

The most eye-catching change affects Putrid Membrane. On Mythic, its duration is being reduced from one hour to 30 seconds. Yes, hour. When we first wrote about Ula’tek’s Mythic egg mechanic, allowing the wrong Blightscale Spawn to hatch could apply this stacking raid-wide Nature damage effect for essentially the remainder of the attempt. It was a wonderfully brutal way of telling the raid that mistakes have consequences, assuming the consequence needed to survive several meal breaks.

Thirty seconds still punishes the error. It simply stops one bad egg from becoming part of the raid’s permanent geological record.

Blizzard is also dramatically reducing the number of adds and eggs Mythic groups need to manage. Stage 1 Serpent’s Call drops from 13 Blightscale Spawns per wave to eight. Stage 2 falls from 14 Spawns per side to 12, while the intermission now creates eight eggs instead of 14. Stone Venom damage is also reduced across all difficulties.

Those changes attack exactly the portions of Ula’tek that defined progression. Blizzard had already reduced Blight Vein damage and shortened Soul Constrictor during the Race to World First, but the boss still survived deep into the third reset. By the time Liquid finally killed her, both leading guilds had pushed through hundreds of attempts, and Echo had reached 1.23% before the World First ended.

This Is the Difficulty Curve Blizzard Told Us Was Coming

The important context is that none of this is especially surprising. Before Season 2 began, Blizzard openly told players that The Venomous Abyss was designed to become easier over time. Some of that happens naturally through better gear, tier sets and weekly progression systems. Some happens because Blizzard watches thousands of raid pulls and decides that fourteen eggs were a lovely idea in a meeting but perhaps eight are enough in practice.

The raid certainly had room to come down. Only 231 guilds defeated Heroic Ula’tek during the opening week, making it one of the hardest Heroic finales in recent WoW history. Mythic then produced consecutive 300-pull walls at Coiled Altar and Ula’tek.

The September 15 tuning pass does not make The Venomous Abyss easy.

It does make the second half considerably less interested in turning every small mistake into a historical event.

For guilds currently reaching Sszorak, Twin Fangs, Coiled Altar or Ula’tek, this reset should feel noticeably different.

Especially Ula’tek.

Her one-hour reminder that somebody mishandled an egg now lasts thirty seconds.

Sometimes personal growth requires letting go.
